New overtime rules: Playoffs

In order for the game to end without the other team getting a chance, they have to:

Score a touchdown 6 pts
Score on a 50 yard field goal 3 points
Score on a 2 point conversion 2 points

If they don’t the other team only has to best the opposing score. If tied after first possession the full quarter must be played.

Even in baseball the other team gets a chance its a fu rule period. Play the full 15 again and again until one team wins.

Here's the OT rules that I've been pushing for since before the did the most recent rule change with the FGs:

If a team scores on the first possession in OT, the second team gets one chance to beat (not tie) that score. After the first possession it's sudden death, same as now.

So a FG loses to a TD, but there's no option to tie and extend the game.

A TD+1 would only lose to a TD+2. Imagine how exciting that would have been to see Mahomes with a chance to win with a TD+2.

A TD+2 wins outright, since it can't be outscored. But teams would be unlikely to risk it because then they lose to a TD+1. Either way it would be exciting. If you have the balls to go for 2 and get it - fine, you win.

Except against the chiefs defense. +2 would have been a cakewalk for ne.

I'd have to dig up the statistics, but something like 50% of time, the coin toss winner wins the game on the first drive in OT. Then its about 50% the rest of the time.

So something like 60%-75% of the time, the team that wins the coin-toss ends up winning in OT.

I think they should eliminate the rule that a TD ends the OT. OT should be a 10 or 15 minute quarter, and whoever wins at the end of that quarter is the winner. If it's still tied at the end of OT, then I guess you could go to the sudden death, TD is all it takes to win. Or keep playing quarters until a winner is declared.

Yep they're gonna do something. Then of course next time we'll get screwed by the new rule when we would have won under the old rule.

Twas always thus.

I don't like the shortened OT, at least make it 15 minutes. A long drive that chews up the clock and then a short FG and that might still be game over.

DaFace had a great idea today for overtime (regular season and postseason), and we worked on it today. I think it's the best idea ever.

Here's how it works. When overtime starts, the winner of a coin flip can choose any situation on the field - any yard line, any down, any distance, and they can choose offense or defense. So for example, they make take 1st and 10 at the opponent's 20, or 1st and 10 at the 50, or 4th and goal at the 1, or 3rd and 5 at their own 1 yard line. Whatever they want. Then both teams take a turn running a drive that starts at that scenario. The winner is the team that gets more points, or if there's a tie in the score, the winner is the team that moved the ball furthest downfield.

If you really wanted to be fair, you could also have both teams pick a scenario, and then you play four drives with the same rules. Both teams take both roles in both scenarios, and the winner is the team with the highest score or the team with the most yards if it's a tie.

The possibilities of this system are fascinating. It would be a blast to watch as a fan.

I've always hated the NFL rules but back in the day you could still play defense. Now it's just too ****ing easy to score. The way they favor offenses these days, 3rd & 18 becomes 1st & 10 by a 5 yard holding call or a questionable DPI call.

I say each offense gets a possession, period.

No it isn't... It just seems that way because the Chiefs D sucks and our offense is so good. Ask Raven fans if it is just 'too easy to score' in today's NFL and I bet you'll get a very different answer.

Keep it the way it is. It's a team game. Defense has just as much of a chance to stop the offense as the offense does to score.

Saints got the ball first in their OT game and what happened? Did they win?

Exactly my opinion.

i have rethought this whole thing:

in overtime in the playoffs, simply make the offense play defensive positions, and the defense must play offense.

in this scenario, the chiefs would have gotten the ball back and eric berry wouldn't have had to run around, he could just be the qb
