Do you honestly think that Hudson is as good at the Center position as Houston is at the OLB position?

Going from Hudson to Kush (if Hudson is gonna get 9 mil) is not 4 mil though, it's about 8.5 mil.

IMO, I think the center position is easier to fill with a player that you won't notice a noticable difference between said player and Hudson, than OLB and Houston.

Who said he wasn't?

I'm not sure that the team was envisioning a 22 sack outing in 2014 from Houston. I'm sure that they were considering him getting a pretty hefty offer from the outside world and that Dee Ford was an insurance policy against that based on his production at that point.

Hali you can retain for relatively decent money versus the amount that it's going to cost you to keep Houston's services.

Do they feel that they have enough in an improved Poe and Bailey on that side that they can get by with Ford versus Houston?

Or do you think that they will get by more/easier with Kush surrounded by Allen and Fulton versus Hudson?

As of right now, I'd be inclined to lean towards Hudson versus Houston if that's what it comes down to all things considered, though I'm not really thrilled about paying Rodney over 7 mil per.

If they lose/can't sign Hudson, where do they put that money? Houston? That doesn't help the O line suckage.

You do know what a center has to deal with on a per snap basis, right?

Ford versus Kush.

That's what it comes down to really.

He is not an OT. A center is important yes....but there are plenty in the league that dont command that kind of coin and are effective. The more you pay him then the less you have to find a solid guard to play next to him or a solid RT. The line is a "unit" that doesnt getbto freelance and make plays. Therefore their individual contributions are aided by the abilities of the player next to him to handle his own assignment.

Sure, but I think you're overrating Hudson.

And in the Chiefs current defensive philosophy, you understand how important an OLB is?

They've already tagged Houston, so it seems they've answered that question for you. I don't think you can really count much from Hali at this point either, so seems more reasonable to me that they drafted Ford to replace Hali as he doesn't have the ability to hold up at LOLB.

Paying your center that much is going to make getting better guards next to him tougher as well.

I don't know the answer here
Having the same franchise tag number for all 5 OL, combined with the big cap jump is going to be making guards and centers a lot of money. Teams will eventually have to adjust, or they'll keep struggling in the interior.

Sure.

However, it just seems the difference between say, the best center in football, and simply a good solid center, isn't really that much in terms of success.

I'm not overvaluing or overrating Hudson.

He's the best offensive lineman on this team. By a large measure. And I believe that he's a top 5 guy at his position right now. And I feel that the center is the most important lineman of the group, especially in today's league where the best pass rusher isn't continually situated on the right side of the defensive line as in ages past.

And I am well aware of Houston's contribution to the team. I think he's one of, if not the best 34 OLB in the NFL. Though I do feel that he's been the beneficiary of substantially more support than Hudson has on the other side of the ball.

Hali, Poe, Bailey have all helped to make Houston's NFL life a little more enjoyable than McGlynn, Linkenbach, Allen and Fulton have made Rod Hudson's.

It's not just Houstons contribution though. I agree, Hudson has had crap at guard this year next to him. But, as a reversal, does he do as much to make those guys better around him (or not look as bad) as Houston does?

So while you say those guys have made HOustons job much easier, how much has having Houston out there made their life better?

When it comes to making a guy the highest paid player at his position, thats something I look at. How much better does he make the people around him?

I think Houston does that much better than Hudson. However, with what Hudson has around him, I'm not sure how much chance he had.
