Should I watch A New Hope right before driving up to this one?

I would say you should watch it right after this one. The ending is literally minutes before ANH starts.

I got you. That's kind of what I inferred from it, but wasn't sure.

While he was correct, I sat dumbfounded that someone my age, could not instantly understand, just based on the previews and lead-up to this movie, where this movie fell in line with the others. Especially AFTER having just watched the freakin' movie! So, I'd recommend for anyone who is going with a group of people that have just a casual relationship with the Star Wars universe to give them a bit of a refresher course before going to see it. For me, who will go again with my wife, kids, brothers (one of whom needs no help, but the other does) their wives, my sister and my mom and dad tomorrow, I'm going to play the last 10 minutes of E3 where it shows Anakin lose to Obi-wan and then turned into Vadar - and then Amidala dying before Luke and Leia are separated for their concealment and protection. Then I'm going to play the first 10 minutes of E4, where now grown Leia is running from the Empire and hides the plans in R2. I think this will help these guys get a bearing on where Rogue one fits in. Especially because Rogue One so perfectly marry's up to ANH. All of these movies have been seen by all of the people going, (with the exception of my mom and dad who are just going to be joiners and will have no idea what the hell is going on) but the same could be said about my buddy. I think we die-hards forget the more distant relationship others have with the universe.

I saw it last night and saw it again this afternoon since I was off today. Absolutely loved it both times. The only thing holding this back from being my favorite Star Wars movie is nostalgia. Pretty much its going to be this or Empire. Loved the characters, the story and the visuals. Beast mode Vader was the icing on the cake Gareth Edwards kicked some ass.

The Vadar "Beast Mode" in Rogue is worth the cost of admission all by itself. It's short, but oh so sweet.

I have no idea how well this film will play to a more casual viewer, but as a life-long hardcore fan of Star Wars, Rogue One was the movie I've been waiting to see my entire adult life.
The Force Awakens got a lot of leeway from me for the simple fact that it was a more nostalgic return to Star Wars, an experience unencumbered by the almost lampoonish seriousness and scale of the prequels. TFA had its own myriad of problems that became more apparent once the giddy feelings of a return to my childhood abated. But I was okay with that. Star Wars was back. Rogue One, on the other hand, is maybe a masterpiece. It has all the things that made the original trilogy great, and it does it all its own way. The characters are compelling, many with a depth established despite very little in the way of exposition. The set pieces are amazing. I can't describe them any other way, and I mean ALL of them, whether it's Jedha or the kyber processing facility or the massive final act. They all deliver. And, oh, that final act. Christ. It was on a scale with the final acts of IV and VI. But with the emotional impact of V. I won't go into spoilers this weekend, not yet, but there were more moments in today's movie that left me on the verge of tears than there were in the entire prequel trilogy. It felt like Empire Strikes Back. The sole issue I had with the movie was the score. Particularly early in the movie. I've seen people talk about how the lack off a scroll felt off, but for me it was the score. It just wasn't Star Wars. It was Giacchino doing his own thing, with a few key moments (thankfully) highlighted by Williams themes. And it just didn't work for me. Maybe I'm biased, after years of playing The Old Republic, and experiencing that score. It's sad to me, honestly, that I can point to a video game that did Star Wars better than the two newest cinematic turns in the franchise. But that was it. I loved absolutely everything else about Rogue One, unreservedly, and I can't wait to see it again once work and weather stop conspiring against me. |

I'm a casual Star Wars fan. I saw the first three as a kid, loved them, had all they toys, etc.
I've only seen parts of the newer movies. Quite frankly when they've been on cable they didn't grab my attention at all. Going into this movie all I knew was that it was a stand alone movie taking place before episode 4. With all that being said, I really enjoyed Rogue. Very entertaining. Good characters and story. The score was okay, but nothing like the original or Jaws, ET, close encounters, etc. a little surprised by how dark it was, but it had to be. Even if you aren't a Star Wars nut, it's enjoyable. Weird thing - Friday night 7 pm show only 40% full.
