2019 Free agency Thread

We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

According to @SlaterNFL on NFL Network, Earl Thomas wants a deal of two-years, $30M.

Earl Thomas Looking for $14M Per Year

Former Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas is one of the biggest names available in free agency this year. He's a six-time Pro Bowler and a three-time All-Pro, and those kinds of defenders do not become available often.

However, Thomas is also on the verge of turning 30 and has a recent injury history that will give some teams pause. He has finished two of the last three seasons on injured reserve with a broken leg.

Therefore, while it's hard to discount Thomas as a player, he does carry some risk. This, along with his desire to be the league's highest-paid safety, could be why he's still available after the opening day of the "legal tampering" period.

According to NFL Network's Jane Slater, Thomas is seeking a deal worth at least $14 million per year:

This figure isn't as outlandish as it might have seemed just a few days ago, even for an aging player with some injury concern. This is because Landon Collins—another player who received a deal over $80 million—is expected to earn $14 million per season on his new six-year deal with the Washington Redskins, per Spotrac.

Collins is just 25, but he's also a box safety who is coming off a partially torn rotator cuff. Thomas is an elite back-end safety who can possibly be had for that same yearly salary but with a much smaller overall investment.

Don't be surprised if Thomas gets the money he's looking for.
Coming off an injury and 30+ years old, he's pretty ballsy.

Veach has been our Gm for like a year and a half, and we’ve immediately become a future force due to drafting the guy he pined for.

In general, I like to give GMs a few years before I start really criticizing them - it can be tough to understand someody’s vision for the team in a short amount of time.

Also consider the fact this dude took over a broke dick defense littered with bad contracts.

Personally, I’ve been happy with most of what Veach has done since taking over. I can understand not particularly liking his moves, but suggesting he should be fired at this point is, IMO, completely ridiculous.

The Hitchens deal. Other than that he’s been good.

I will say I prefer Dorsey for his ability to draft, but I also haven’t seen enough of Veach drafting to truly make that assessment.

Which contracts are really that stupid? Watkins got paid but it's also a 3-year deal with an out after 2.

Hitchens looked like a bad deal after the way he played but if he improves in the new defense, he'll literally cost HALF of what some of these jokers just got in free agency.

Other than those 2, where has he really made mistakes.

Honestly, I'm much more concerned about the way he drafts right now. Trading up for Speaks looks like a bust move right now but at least they're changing defenses, which should help him.

The Hitchens deal won't look bad at all if he plays better this year. He isn't even getting half of what Mosley just got.

Watkins has a cap hit near 20 million this year. Stupid.

And if he sat on his ass the last two years in free agency, you’d bitch about that too.

I’m not going to fault the guy for swinging big while we have Mahomes on a rookie contract. That’s exactly what I want him to do.

At least they’re deals that you can get out of after 2 years. That’s why I’m fine with them.

Okay I guess. I don't think I'd call it stupid, I mean it's not Justin Houston's contract or anything. But yeah, he's probably overpaid.

Yea it’s not ideal but we absolutely need him to keep this offense as great as it is and we can get out of it next year.

What would you do with that extra cap room this year? Hand out a stupid contract to somebody else? It’s not like this deal or any of the ones he’s given out are going to keep us from extending Jones and Hill either.

I don't understand why people are bitching about Veach's contracts being stupid, when all they want is for Veach to hand out a stupid contract.

Thank GOD for Watkins' contract if it means not signing Earl Thomas.

And quit arguing about that bundle of sticks Dee Ford. If they plan to get the jump on extending Jones, they HAVE to move his ass. If they don't, Ford and his agent are going to be screaming bloody ****ing murder in Veach's ear for an entire year, and I can guarantee you the Chiefs want no part of it.
