Brett Veach prioritizing re-signing Chris Jones, L'Jarius Sneed

What some of us have been wondering...

Quote:
HENDERSON, Nev. -- Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said he is aware of the challenge the organization faces in re-signing both defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed but said it would be an offseason priority to get both players under new contracts.

"Sometimes I look at our situation and I'm like, 'I don't know how we're going to do this,' but we usually work through things systematically and have a list of the priorities,'' Veach said as the Chiefs continued preparations for Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. "Certainly, Chris and LJ are at the top of the list.

"It's extremely hard because you have two keystone players there.''

Jones, 29, has been one of the NFL's top pass-rushers for years. He had 10.5 sacks this season to tie for the team lead after missing training camp and the first regular-season game while holding out for a new contract.

He didn't get the extension he was looking for, but the Chiefs sweetened the final season of his existing contract.

"It was important for us to mend the fences with Chris because we love him and he's an iconic player here, not just here, but I mean of all time,'' Veach said. "That was important for us, and we'll continue to work hard and see if we can get something done, but it will be a priority for us.''

The Chiefs used Sneed, 27, this season to defend against the opponent's top receiver much of the time, and none had big games against him.

Jones and Sneed are key players for an improved Chiefs defense that allowed fewer points than all but one other team during the regular season and held the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to 41 total points in the playoffs.

The Chiefs had defenses that were at times competitive since Patrick Mahomes became their starting quarterback in 2018, but rarely were they consistently so. Veach and the Chiefs found the task of building a top defense difficult because the past few seasons they were carrying Mahomes' massive contract.

"I still remember in '17 and '18 just saying if we can just get them to punt just once we've got a shot,'' Veach said. "Now all of a sudden it's like all we've got to do is just score once and we're good.

"Going from where we were in '17 and '18 to having one of the best defenses, knowing the constraints we had of just paying [Mahomes] and probably drafting later [in rounds], I don't think I ever envisioned having a top one or two defense.''

Well, you're consistent, I'll give you that.

But no, they won't be paying top dollar for a near or over 30 #1 WR.

That's re-runned.

You'll get Mooney and a top 64 draft pick and you'll like it.

Sneed will want to be paid as the highest corner and he should be. Jones will want basicly the same. Mahomes is also. 3 on the same team being highest paid at their positions isn't happening. Obviously either Sneed or Jones isn't getting that on this team.

The Commanders have some potential free agents that I feel could fit in KC pretty well for the right price. Curtis Samuel, Antonio Gibson. Pringle and Crowder are both potential free agents that could be decent depth. Of course Washington could resign any or all of these guys.

You’re consistent in having conversations with yourself.

But I like that Mooney is a thing now on CP.

When I first brought him up as a guy who could help us I was told he sucked.

On one hand, you want to talk about how bad the rest of the room is, but on the other, you want to put the entire offensive struggles on Rice as proof that he isn't or can't be a WR1.

You're not a serious person.
And their last 4 drives of the SB were TD, FG, FG, TD. They were a Pacheco fumble at the 8 yard line from scoring 28 points at minimum.

They scored 25, 26 and 27 points in the playoffs in 3 of 4 games and that guy is saying that's 70's style low scoring ball? It's like he thinks the Chiefs were winning games 10-3 or 13-10 when the offense was so much better in the playoffs.

The cherry on top was proclaiming it wasn't good enough. Yeah..

You're right. He's not a serious person

Those are the only two free agents that really matter. Maybe they can find room for both. I wouldn't expect Sneed to take an extremely team-friendly deal, but Chris Jones might. If he wants to stay as badly as he claims.

Sneed is 27, Chris Jones will be 30 at the start of next season.

That’s the deciding factor to prioritize Sneed to me.

Said all year that the offense was good enough as long as they didn't kill themselves with numerous self-inflicted errors. I don't know why people thought we needed 30 ppg with this defense.

That said, they should obviously be looking to bolster the WR room.

If we won’t keep Sneed I prefer they tag/trade him vs just letting him hit the market.

They need a TE as well unless they believe Gray is that guy. Kelce is critical to this offense. His total production will be hard to replace, but he’s gonna be 35 and it’s not realistic to expect him to put up 100 catch, 1000 yard seasons consistently anymore.

You would think the prospect of a three-peat might make one of the them (probably Sneed) ok with the franchise tag next year.

Not from me you didn't.

Mooney has a 1000 yard season under Nagy, is superb athletically, still young, and under valued with a QB that can't make it to a second down field read.

He's exactly the guy they should look at.

Curtis Samuel would be an absolutely perfect fit here. For some reason EB didn't really use him to run the ball this year but I can't even imagine the shit Andy could come up with for a dynamic talent like him.

Gray's only problem is that he plays on a team with Travis Kelce.

What's the comparable history for tag and trade situations that could be similar to Sneed? Curious if there is some sort of ballpark compensation we could reasonably expect.
