Chiefs Salary Cap 2024 - Moves to be made

Clearly, MVS should and will be cut June 1st which frees up about $11M. There are ways to restructure Mahomes, Thuney and Kelce potentially. The question here is, can the Chiefs find enough room to sign Sneed, Jones, Tranquill and Gay and still sign a top tier WR? I believe the 24 cap is going to increase a well.

Cap gurus, what other move can be made here?

Safety is always cheap and the Chiefs are so good at finding them. Connor could easily take over Reid's role. Him and Cook are a fine duo with a cheap FA as the 3 like Mike Edwards.

Reid will be so overpaid next year for what he does here

Ehhh I do not like the idea of Chamarri Connor starting safety, maybe it's just me though.

I definitely wouldn't be opposed on Reid either way. But he's clearly a leader back there and the secondary has been in sync as shit this year. I'd like to keep that together.

He's not slowing down.

He's just never really taken a step forward. He is who he was in Houston - a guy who's raw talent suggests he might be able to be a do-everything safety but who's play on the field just doesn't get there.

He's probably gonna be at/near the same level of play he's been at the last couple of years for the next 2-3 years as well. He's a solid player and depending on cost I wouldn't mind keeping him as a bit of veteran throughput.

But if you can't get him extended to lower this year's cap hit in a way that isn't prohibitive long-term, you could move on and make it work without him.

I think he's better than you're giving him credit for - he's just not flashy. He never has been.

Gay very consistently takes bad angles, does not understand or follow his assignment, and quite simply is not where he should be. This isn't anything new or revelatory - it's tolerated because he's a freak athlete that possesses a rare skill set.

He's a freak talent but his play is another story entirely.

I honestly think he looks a step slower this year, physically. Not as bad as McKinnon's step back, but noticeable.

Don't have to wait until June 1st, cut MVS right away and it clears $12 million from the 2024 cap. That's the easiest decision to make.

I'm guessing KC could do some cap magic with Pat's contract to create some space if necessary.

The unfortunate thing on the OL is that Thuney and Taylor both have less than ideal cap numbers the next 2 years and there's not a whole lot you can do to change that. If Taylor can be moved to LT and play there adequately it's not as big of a deal, but paying a highly penalized RT and a LG on the decline that much money really is not the best use of valuable cap room.

Paying any G that much money is just not smart. I know why we did it at the time but the line isn't a disaster any longer. He's a LT in a pinch and might just play there this playoff run.

He's a machine and I love the guy. That said you can't afford to pay a G almost 20 million. Or a RT for that matter. Not at this stage of a dynasty...

Who says Thuney is declining? Interior linemen can play at a high level into their late 30s.

Nah, RT is about as Important as LT, especially with Bosa and Crosby in the AFC West. The league is catching on and RTs pay is starting to catch up.
