Do birds ever die mid-air?

I was pondering this today.

Aside from getting shot by hunters or sucked into jet engines, do birds ever die of natural causes while they're flying? Y'know, like a heart attack or stroke or something?

I'm asking because I've never heard of someone getting hit by a falling bird. It seems like there are enough birds and enough people that I'd know someone who was hit by a falling bluebird or wren. And what about geese? Could a person be killed by a falling goose? I'm just wondering if I should be worrying about this.

A duck flew through the window of my instructor’s Cessna 152.

According to him it was a mess. He said the landing was quite calm, comparing it to flying a convertible.

It's happened to me three times over the years; only once did I have the shotgun.

The worst was one morning when I was exiting Union Station on the way to work. It was a gull that got me, but it felt like it was a ****ing pterodactyl. The front of my shirt was covered in splattered shit. It was gross and it stank. Obviously I was in the middle of a mass of people at the time. Several people recoiled in horror, a couple looked like they were going to puke, and I did hear some laughter (bastards). Luckily I was wearing a dark colored shirt, so I was able to go back inside the station and wash it out in a bathroom sink. And much like other incidents that have happened to me that I should have kept to myself and didn't, I told a couple of people at work what happened. Heard plenty of laughter after that.

Honest to God true story, I was driving in the country on a state highway a few years back, nothing in sight but trees and grass, perfectly sunny day.

Out of nowhere a bald Eagle drops dead about 500 feet in front of my vehicle. Didn’t hear any gunshots or anything nearby. So yes, I think it happens.

Also the Thanksgiving food chain.

I went hunting for canadian snow geese once. there's no bag limit. we walked away with three times as many birds as we had empty shells. at least 60% died of heart attack just from hearing the shots.

Yes they do, accidentally killed two quail with the work truck tuesday

It looked like they were fighting, just came screaming out of the cornfield next to the road, locked together and right into my grill… probably have 15-20 bird kills by vehicle over the years

They often underrate the oncoming speed and height of tractor trailers
