6 of the last 12 Christmas vacations have been spent in the friendly confines of the local hospital because my dad has had some type of issue. Literally, around the holidays it means that ole pops is going to be admitted for some illness.

Well this year didn't disappoint and presented a whole mess of other issues that were unexpected.

My dad is only 56, has had 4 heart attacks (one at 30, one at 36, one at 44 and a small one last year). He has terrible back issues. However, he keeps himself in shape at the gym each day.

Last Friday, he had to be rushed to the hospital with what was determined as a kidney stone. Terrible pain. However in the scans, they noticed that the aneurysm he knew about didn't look right so they wanted to do more tests on the aorta to see if the aneurysm was separating away from the artery.

They gave him a dye that he was allergic to (thank god he had taken bennadryl earlier in the day and that neutralized the dye's impact on his system) so he had to wait to have the tests done.

He went back in today, and they found a small blood clot in his lung, and then determined that his aorta is splitting in several areas. They have to wait until the clot passes so they can take care of the artery.

Doctors say this is a more serious surgery than open heart. My old man has been through a lot, but this is the first time in a long time that I saw him really afraid because of how serious the nature of the surgery is. Plus, with the recovery time, he'll be away from the gym, and that's not really good for his heart issues either.

If you can throw up some good thoughts/prayers that whatever obstacles come in his way he's able to conquer I'd appreciate it. I want him to be around to see my son and the 2nd kid on the way in August grow up.

I do understand I spent last yrs Christmas in the hospital with my father and had thanksgiving dinner in there with him 3 & 4 yrs ago...heart surgeries..then a massive stroke after that.
Hes my best friend and really hes always been a great guy friendly and helpful to everyone he meets I feel so sad for him to have to go through hard times like these recoveries but he battles through..I also know the pain on how you feel about him being there for the grand kids.
Never fear he will triumph through this and your kids will grow to love him no matter what and he will them.
When my sons 12 & 6 have visited him the last few yrs they cuddle up with him on the couch and share a movie or dad tells stories the best he can like a grandfather should.

Ehh sorry I'm getting a little long winded myself thinking on this...and my allergies seem to be acting up a little.

Ha, my mom's gene's aren't the greatest.

Her dad died of a heart attack at 28.

She's also fighting stomach cancer.

I've been a lazy shit for about 2 years now. It's time to get back to the grind and get myself in tip top shape for myself and family.

Family medical history is one reason I lost over 50 pounds seven years ago to hope to avoid going down that road. So far so good. I changed my diet big time. I was once around 250 now I am barely 190 on a bad day. I weight about the same when I went to basic but I can keep the weight this time. On my dad's side his dad went thru 2, 4 quadruple bypasses in the early 80's and 2 or 3 heart attacks before he figured it out to listen to the doctors. Mom's side diabetes goes back to my mom and her grandma they both died from it. But so far I have taken after my mom sides of the family and my great aunt just around died 93. My dad's side my grandpa had a place matcher and a defibrillator installed and he lasted to 90. They both died in the 2 years. Your dad is about where my dad's dad was when this started so a lot has changed if he will take care of himself. Prayers on the way.

He definitely will. He's at the gym 6 days a week. That's his main concern with the surgery is that he'll be out of commission a while and that could have some negative effects for his heart.

That's good to hear. Make sure he steers clear of sugar of all kinds and fried foods. Once or twice a week is fine just not everyday.
