Maui is burning...

There's housing all up and down that side of the mountain and it's immensely sketchy right now. Even Kihei is in danger (south central). Prayers to the locals and anyone who's trapped in this hellscape. Seemed as if the high winds caught them off guard. But beyond the loss of life of the worlds coolest tree (Banyan tree the size of a city block) is probably gone now (https://lahainarestoration.org/lahaina-banyan-tree/).

So can someone explain to me how the **** this thing got so out of control in the first place.

This isn't Cali with huge amounts of land. You have the US NAVY right ****ing there....

Unless things changed the West side of the island is the "wet side" so maybe its changed since I visited in 2011.

That being said those wind speeds while high are not crazy for planes.

The mountains block the rain so it's arid in the south where most of the jobs\resorts\people are.

And I don't think you're doing water-drops in sustained 60+ MPH winds? That sounds ****ing crazy. But maybe there's somebody with a lot of flight time in those vehicles that can prove me wrong...

I've seen some of what they do up close and personal and can't imagine it would be easy by any means in those conditions.

Ground crews will sometimes do controlled burns around structures before the fire gets there, but how "controlled" can that be with 60mph winds.... and if the fire is moving closer to you than you can prepare the area, you're ****ed.

And even if planes can fly, what's the effectiveness of dropping slurry or water in those types of conditions.... and no idea if they even use/have slurry and the kind of stuff you'll find in AZ/CA/etc where fires are common.

Many times it's far more about contain and saving structures than simply putting out a fire... and fire moves fast enough without 60mph winds. And if it's not an area that ever gets fires, not sure they would have any reason to do controlled burns and things like that every few years.

Dry conditions already in place + a nearby hurricane bringing in hurricane force winds to act as a blow torch, igniting the fires.

But they have wind like that in south Cali when their wild fires are raging. And they still can bring in heavy tankers.

I'm still trying to figure out how 36 people ****ing died. I know the fire was spreading fast, but military is so close by. I just don't understand the reaction time of the government.

California is also far better equipped to handle wildfires than Hawaii due to having them almost yearly. What honestly could the Navy do? I guess evacuate by sea. I get it, but there are probably good reasons why they haven't been used outside of just inaction. It does really suck that 36 people so far have died and hopefully that number doesn't go higher.
