I will say that since we don't get the characters inner thoughts that this version of the story is a lot more subtle than the book. Except for Yabushige, that actor is really expressive and you almost don't need subtitles to get what he is saying and feeling.

I watched the first episode this weekend. Agree, very well done. Chorography, cinematography, direction etc are all top shelf.

If they wanted to keep the same actors, they would probably adapt Gai-Jin next. Tai-pan and Noble House deal with Hong Kong. Whirlwind deals with Iran and King Rat would have mostly English and American actors.
