In order for the game to end without the other team getting a chance, they have to:

Score a touchdown 6 pts
Score on a 50 yard field goal 3 points
Score on a 2 point conversion 2 points

If they don’t the other team only has to best the opposing score. If tied after first possession the full quarter must be played.

Like it or not, Defense and Special teams are part of the game.

3rd and 10, 3rd and 10, 3rd and 10, neutral zone infraction. Just because your defense sucks doesn't mean the system is unfair. Build a balanced team that is well coached. If you were afraid of it ending in a coin flip, be more aggressive in going for the TD before the end of the game.

How do you leave the No. 1 offense on the sidelines in OT when it is an offensive driven league now? It's just not logical for the NFL for what the NFL has shown they want.

i think the way it is is fine.

Maybe, the higher seeded team is deemed to be the coin toss winner for OT without a coin toss would be a way to reward better regular season record.

I don't mind the rules, because I think playoff football is all about having the most well rounded team on both sides of the ball. Just think the NFL has done anything and everything to promote offense EXCEPT playoff OT rules. Doesn't follow their other actions.

This is simply a sour grapes thread. The team that wins the OT coin toss wins about 53% of the time. There's nothing wrong with the OT rules. If KC would have won the toss and beat NE, no one (no message board, not on B$PN, nowhere) would be discussing this.:

Honest question here: If the Chiefs win the toss and score a TD, are "experts" having this conversation? My guess is no. I am also guessing there isn't a thread about this on Chiefs planet if the Chiefs win.

OT rules are fine. The longer the game goes, the higher likelihood there is of more injuries.

i say you still do the coin flip just to decide if you want to kick or receive the ball. each team gets the ball on offense. now after each team has the ball if the score is still tied, then it should be sudden death and next score wins. i just think it sucks that you have two teams with great offenses and one of them wasn’t going to get to touch the ball because neither defense was going to stop the other. Mahomes has 50tds and 5,000+ yards in the regular season and will win the MVP...and he doesn’t get a chance to win/tie game in OT of the AFCG? the rules need to change.

can you imagine OT in basketball if the rule was if you win the tip and score on that possession then the game is over?

what about baseball? what if the away team scores in their at bat and the game ended without the home team getting an at bat?

i’ve been saying for years they need to change so each team gets a chance on offense. if the chiefs would have won the coin toss and scored a TD, damn right i believe the other team should get a chance at it, it’s called being fair. the NFL is the only league that has these dumb OT rules

I don't believe in changing the rules for the playoffs. Game 3 is just as important as Week 19. A bad call can mean the difference in seeding which is the most important item.

Give teams 2 minutes and 2 time outs to score, then let the other team try to match. Keep going until someone can't keep up.

Play the full 15 mins its a gd championship game.
If still tied play another 15 mins, and so on.
Giving one team the ball and they score first is bs way to decide the winner, so i guess you are ok with applying the same for a championship basketball game.
Not fair to both teams period end of story.
