810 Just said someone got murderd outside Arrowhead

Police: Man who died at Arrowhead was in a vehicle similar to one he arrived in
December 3
BY CHRISTINE VENDEL
The Kansas City Star

A Smithville man who was found in someone else’s Jeep and then died in a struggle outside Arrowhead Stadium Sunday had gone to the game in a similar vehicle that was parked nearby, police said Tuesday.

The Jeep also showed no signs of a break-in, leading police to believe it may have been left unlocked when Kyle Van Winkle, 30, climbed in and sat down.

Police released the additional details Tuesday as they continued to investigate what led to the death of Van Winkle, who had attended the Chiefs game against the Denver Broncos with relatives.

Detectives planned to interview relatives Tuesday to determine when they last saw him inside the stadium.

Police were called to Lot A of the Truman Sports Complex about 5:20 p.m. Sunday on a disturbance. Witnesses told police the Jeep owner had returned to his vehicle with his son, who is about 10 years old, when they realized a stranger was inside. The boy summoned help from several tail-gaters and they engaged in a struggle with Van Winkle, who had been sitting in the Jeep. Van Winkle collapsed and later died at a hospital.

Police did not say how Van Winkle died, but they said his body bore no signs of obvious injury.

Officers arrested three men shortly after the death, but they had to track down the fourth man who was arrested. Police searched one man’s home in Independence on Monday.

Detectives released three of the men Monday night and the fourth man Tuesday morning, pending further investigation.

Some new info in this one. He is not likely a thief, or certainly isn't known to be one.

I'm thinking this is appearing to be in a wrong car incident, where the owner of the jeep thought he was getting robbed, while the deceased thought it was the jeep that he rode in.

Just my thoughts.

The only thing that confused me a little more is the search at his home. That tells me something different....

That's a good point. I hadn't considered that he would mistake the jeep to whom ever he road with that had a similar jeep.

His home wasn't searched. One of the people in custody had their home searched.

If so, it happens, doesn't mean you deserved to get killed for it. Could have been intoxicated and was a bit confused on the vehicle...

Few years ago, drunk was trying to open side metal security gate to the house. Shepard was going ballistic, dude just kept standing there inebriated with me yelling through the door "what the f... are you doing?" Cops came questioned him or tried to... arrested, etc. Turns out he was nearby, drunk and trying to find his friends house, convinced my back door was it.

Incorrect, if anybody is in or around your personal property they deserve a slow and painful death.

That's your stuff they're messing with/CP

I could see that. I seen that happened several times where someone thought they were standing by the car they thought they came in, only to find out that it wasn't theirs. Of course, they didn't break in, which brings us this part....

Did the deceased actually "break" in, or was the car left unlocked? Because if he was drunk, and say if the car was unlocked, then it's easy to assume that he was in the jeep, waiting for the people he thought he rode in, to come back.

Now if he actually broke in, shattered glass and all that, then that's another different story....

Plus, if the true owner saw someone in their vehicle, and they don't recognize him/her, chances are that the owner thought he was being robbed, and needed to defend his property/vehicle, thus the calling for help thing, while plummeling him.

What a mess this is....

Could have happened. Especially if he rode with someone else. Lets be honest, intoxicated after a game, doesn't quite recall where they parked or what exact specifics about the vehicle was. Certainly conceivable. But hey, he shot have been shot dead.
