Yep, teams that chase to fill holes end up overpaying, and that causes downstream issues.

See Frank Clark's contract. Hell, see Jawaan Taylor's contract. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet when there's no other option.

Other times, you overpay with picks and cap (Miami w/ Tyreek, LV w/ Davante) when you don't have a QB.

In this scenario, the best move would be to spread that cap room across a number of stable vets, and supplement with low-risk/high-upside FA's (Veach's wayward boys club), and draft well.

Exactly. How many big name 3 techs are even in the league? 4-5? Like actual household type names? You can't run around trying to fill that.

and part of team building is signing replacement players. the chiefs lost two OTs last year and signed FAs to replace them. there is no one in the draft that can replace Jones, so you have to go the FA route. signing a Wilkinson or maduibeke lessens the sting of losing Jones.

If either side was in a different place than they were last summer he'd already be signed. Dragged out past long ago. Probably not happening is where we are now.

I agree. No hard feelings but let another team do it. We have many important players to try and keep this year and next year.

Well, they are not going to carry him at 19 mil this year. Won't happen and we have depth at DB. Trade is best for us.

If they weren't willing to carry him at 19 they wouldn't have tagged him. They will try to trade him but if they can't they'll pay it.

Sure they may not play him at $19m on the tag.

But that probably just means they’ll give him an extension if Jones leaves. Go see what your worth now, and KC can pay it if Jones is gone.

I hope she signs an extension but no way we carry that tag. They can find a trade and that team will give him the price he wants if need be.

Just so I'm clear - your position is that if the best offer they can get is a 4th, they're gonna just pull the trigger and move on?

Of course not.

They tagged him to put the option of trading him on the table. Now if they can find a way to get proper value for him, they'll move him. If they can't, he's staying in Kansas City.

The latter seems unlikely as, again, Detroit needs that guy more than literally any player they could possibly get via trade or FA this offseason. He should be their first, last and only priority unless/until a deal is consummated.

They'll get value for him. But if for some bizarre reason they can't, they'll keep him.

My position is that Veach probably has already gauged what he’ll get back and is ok with it and he probably knows what Sneed wants and isn’t paying, hence why this has moved so quickly.

Exactly, it's pretty easy to say "They aren'y paying 19 MM" You're just betting the field with that. Trade, extension or playing on the tag are all possibilities. He probably gets traded but if not they'll pay him one way or the other.

What's moved?

We weren't even the first team to tag a player. And he's not been traded.

All that's happened is what 80% of this board said was almost certainly going to happen going back to December. Sneed being tagged was, IMO, an inevitability by about week 10. It just seemed so obvious.

Thinking through a number of trade scenarios with Sneed. Here's some initial thoughts.

Player for Player
- ATL: Sneed for Kyle Pitts
- DET: Sneed for Jameson Williams + #73

Chiefs Move Up
- CHI: Sneed + #32 + 64 for #9
- PHI: Sneed + #32 + 122 for #22 + #53
- TB: Sneed + #94 for #26

Sneed for Pick
- WAS: Sneed for #36 OR #40
- LAR: Sneed for #53
