Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

On the subject of older movies- I watched the Bicycle Thief (an Italian movie) recently. That was a good movie.

I do want to see that. I also watched the 400 Blows recently. It was good. Not as good as The Bicycle Thief, but good.

I think those are two of the most prominent examples of two similar eras/styles of film that stressed realism -- Italian Neorealism and the French New Wave.

The Italian neorealists were pretty serious people, not entertainers, although The Bicycle Thief certainly can be seen as entertaining. I also feel it's better than 400 Blows, but 400 Blows is remarkable. Much better than Jules and Jim, imo.

I want to see more Italian neorealism. I think it's truly worthy of admiration. It really inspired a great deal, not really about what movies should look like, but what they should be saying.

Glad you enjoyed it, saw it twice in theaters myself...it's a pretty awesome movie. I suggest reading the graphic novel or renting the graphic novel dvd as well. The GN is worth it, ive read it twice now.

Wait to rent transformers, i hated it in theaters. I might enjoy it more at home honestly but not by much...too long and well stupid as hell

As I write this, knowing you, this is probably an epically stupid question, but have you seen Scorsese's documentary/commentary where he discusses keystones in Italian postwar cinema? It was like 4 or 6 hours long and aired on IFC or TCM, IIRC.
