Have you ever had a life wake-up call?

The Rashee Rice thread makes me wonder how often people might have a "wake-up call" to change a behavior. And then I wonder if it's ever permanent.

So...in thinking about things that you might have done that were risky in a bad way, did you ever have a wake-up call that made you permanently change a behavior? If so, what happened and what behavior did it change? And was it a permanent change?

Similarly, have you ever had a temporary wake-up call on something, but then slipped back into the bad habit?

This can be any bad behavior. Maybe it's drugs or alcohol or eatting fatty foods or not wearing a seat belt or engaging in unsafe sex with third-world bargirls or robbing convenience stores or kidnapping hitchhikers or hitchhiking or starting fires by spitting gasoline out of your mouth or doing tightrope walks over deep canyons. Use your imagination.

Very true, and redoubling zero effort still results in no effort. Lol

Me also Mr Rainman, I was told last August 14th I had a fatty liver and early stage cirrhosis. I've always had a good diet, don't drink sodas, don't snack on crap. I've always eatin really healthy, but on the other end of that I've drank a hell of a lot of beer. Like nightly. So since August 14th 2023 I've not had a single beer.

I went to a experimental hospital that would do a fibroscan of the liver that tells the level of fibrosis as well as fatty liver . Since it was free I went OCT 1, Nov 1 and Dec 1. Each time I went showed improvement . Now no fibrosis, no fatty liver . I've dropped my weight 50 pounds and walk twice daily for 45 minutes each.

The last ultrasound did find a small spot on my liver that needs further investigation. I get an MRI Saturday May 11th. They think it looks benign and think it's a cluster of blood vessels. Hopefully they're right. Will know next week.

But yeah, no more alcohol. Dammit!

Not sure if it fully counts ITT but one day I just woke up and decided I hated my job and career and never went back.

Did my mid-life crisis early and it was for the best.

Yeah, I always used to have the front desk give me wake up calls when I was on work trips. It's too easy to ignore the alarm on my phone.

Did anything in particular happen to get you past the tipping point? Or was it just an accumulation of straws on your camel's back?

Yup, was going down a dark path in my mid 20's. Moved far far away on a moments notice to get away from everyone I've known and basically had a new beginning and time to reflect on my poor life choices at the time. Was a good decision.

Was there an event that suddenly shone the light on your path and caused you to move?

I'm interested in those sudden moments of clarity, if indeed that's how it happens.

There wasn't an event, I just thought if I stayed there with all of my "friends" that I would end up drinking myself to death or go to jail or some shit. Basically partying 5 nights a week till dawn and I knew I couldn't keep doing that and knew I had to move away. No regrets there and I don't even drink anymore, I was never addicted to alcohol but I really liked partying at the time.

This is a very interesting topic. I too have wondered this. I've done some really stupid shit. Stuff I wouldn't even mention on here. When I faced the consequences, it felt like a life changing moment. But it's really weird how quickly that feeling fades and we slip back into doing the same crazy shit

So I've been an adrenaline junky most of my life and after engaging in a high risk sport that ended up with me being flight helicoptered to the hospital, I spent two months in a wheelchair and...

Eventually went back to what I was doing before.

But I never put other people at risk. I never weaved in and out of interstate traffic to get my kicks.

Never got in a bar fight.
