Do birds ever die mid-air?

I was pondering this today.

Aside from getting shot by hunters or sucked into jet engines, do birds ever die of natural causes while they're flying? Y'know, like a heart attack or stroke or something?

I'm asking because I've never heard of someone getting hit by a falling bird. It seems like there are enough birds and enough people that I'd know someone who was hit by a falling bluebird or wren. And what about geese? Could a person be killed by a falling goose? I'm just wondering if I should be worrying about this.

Despite all the anecdotal stories of midair deaths, I contend that air travel is still the safest form of travel for birds. They are less likely to die in the air than driving home from the airport. Or something like that.

A bird shit on me once when I was walking in the field at my grandparents' farm with a shotgun.

It died in midair. Immediately.

Going down to Lincoln from Omaha on I-80 one time on my bike doing about 75. A kamikaze blackbird hit me right in the chest and exploded. Scared the shit outta me. Didn't hurt though.

Pigeon hit my windshield when I was going over a bridge on I-44 in St. Louis once. I was probably doing 70 or 75. Big ****er as pigeons go. It flew up from the side and BAM. Left a foot long smear of guts, shit and feathers. That was nasty. But at least it didn't break the glass.

A duck went through the windshield of my grandparents' truck once and landed on the seat right between them. Obviously needed a new windshield, but they did have free duck for dinner.

I said rarely. I think as they get old and tired they usually either get eaten by something in its prime, or get too tired to take off that one last time.

Well, this sure is a down note to start my Wednesday.

Birds are just government drones used to spy on us. Real birds can't fly anymore so the government saw their chance.
