Let's talk defense

Where does everyone think this defense will rank at the end of the season?

Will we have more success stopping the run?

Will the secondary be lit up like a Christmas tree on a regular basis without Peters?

Let's discuss it all in here.

I expect improvement. More speed and youth. I think Fuller will mitigate the loss of Peters somewhat. Might even be a better overall corner, even though he obviously isn't likely to have as many picks.

Agree with the first half of your comment but I'm not confident about the second half.

This defense has less talent than it has had in years, and we all know coaching isn't going to have an impact. I expect the defense to be pretty bad.

Inside linebacker upgrade is gonna be a huge help. Getting rid of Peters and his "ME" attitude is gonna help. If sutton lets Houston and speaks get after the QB we're gonna be much better.

We will end up 18 to 25 in ranking. A lot of this depends on things that we don't know and injuries. If EB goes down our secondary is screwed again. If Dee Ford cannot perform or Kpass has not grown into his position enough it could be worse.

Besides adding more talent next offseason (draft, free agency, etc.) and development from our players, the best addition to the defense will hopefully be addition by subtraction and letting go of that sack of shit Sutton.

They got a lot younger and faster. I think they have improved against the run game and tackling. I think they swapped a couple of turnovers for a couple less "toast" plays trading Peters for Fuller, they traded "meh" guys for different "meh" guys and EB is a big help as a coach on the field if he doesn't come back 100% right away. It would be really hard for them to be worse than last year literally and if they mesh together as a team they could significant improvement.

I hope Berry can stay healthy for the majority of the season. His presence alone gives the defense an entirely different look.

Hitchens is very good and ragland proved to be solid. The weak link is the olb opposite Houston (whoever plays there while Ford is out hurt). Houston is still very good, just not what he was.

I'm way more concerned about corner. We've got nothing outside Fuller.

Veach better not be done. Chiefs need another corner who can play. Maybe another safety, too.

Better than last year but still probably 16-24 in rankings.

Where did the defense take a step back?

DL lost Bennie Logan and Rakeem Roches, but added Xavier Williams and drafted Breeland Speaks (should play DE and OLB) and Derrick Nhadi. I think that’s an obvious upgrade to the DL.

ILB lost DJ, Ramik Wilson and Kevin Pierre Lewis...but added one of the better young ILBs in the game in Anthony Hitchens. I was vocal about hoping we could bring him here and am excited to see him in red. He’s a tone setting 3 down backer. We also drafted DOD and re-signed Terrance Smith. Just going from the ghost of DJ to a young Hitchens is a big upgrade. I think it’s obvious the ILBs are upgraded.

OLB losses the ghost of Tamba Hali and adds Breeland Speaks, a fully healthy Houston, the second year of Passagnon, a healthy Ford (hopefully) and this position group is easily upgraded from last year.

Safety gets all pro Eric Berry back and has great competition at the other safety spot. Golden was an underrated signing and if Watts can learn to tackle, Murray might not even make the team. We might cut/trade Sorensen because this group has good depth and Sorensen is a bit overpaid. Just getting Berry back upgraded the position group.

CB is the spot I can see we possibly downgraded. I’m a big MP fan and think the defense is going to really miss him and I hate the Amerson signing...but in reality if you count Fuller and Peters as a wash, the group is either the same or upgraded.

Lost
Peters
Gaines (addition by subtraction)
Acker
Mitchell (underrated loss)
Baxter

Added/still have
Kendall Fuller
Stephen Nelson
David Amerson
Tremon Smith
Keith Reasor
Will Redmond

The interesting part about this position group is I think Veach has a good eye for talent and he passes on a ton of good talent at CB in the draft and mentioned Reasor and Redmond as reasons why in an interview. I like the gamble and vote of confidence in those two.

If he’s right, the CBs are upgraded, if not, Amerson will get toasted early and often and his replacements won’t fair any better and that spot will kill the defense.

They're both very good players with different play-styles

PFF had Fuller as the higher rated corner in 2017, and many Redskin players looked at him as one of their top defensive players (one player even called him "the best")

Fuller is a stud

The defense will be middle of the road, but will still have a game or two where you want to cut off Bob Sutton's life support.

Regardless of whether it ends in the playoffs or not, the defense is what's going to be the death of the 2018-19 Chiefs.
