*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

Amazing that before 2014 this was probably a top 5 highlight for a generation of Royals fans. Let's say, like Rany - you were a little too young to appreciate 1985. What would your top highlights be?

2003 Season
Brett's last game
Brett 3000
Bo in the All-Star game
Other Bo shenanigans
strike season
Mendy Lopez
Justin Maxwell

What else?

That 94 strike season team was really good. They kind of get forgotten now.

Even more forgotten was that the 95 team was a completely different team, but they were actually in a wild card spot in September before fading away. That was the first year of a full wild card race because of the strike.

Dye was an all-star starter one year. Also, there was the year Greinke won the Cy Young.

I started following the team in 2003 after the 9-0 start (I was 10)

Here were my top 5 highlights pre 2013.

1. Zack Greinke winning the Cy Young (I thought this might be my all time highlight, tbh. I got to see his last start at the K that year. 28K were there (I thought it would be the closest I'd see to a sellout), and I watched him weave his way out of jams all game and dominate Morneau and Mauer. For four years I figured it would be the closest I'd come to witnessing the Royals win it all.

2. The 2003 Royals winning 50 games before the ASB (Ryan was thrilled) and them "going for it" at the deadline by acquiring Brian Anderson and Rondell White - I thought it was the team of destiny - I should add Lima Time's summer dominance to that mix as well.

3. The 2004 Opening Day comeback and walkoff, if only that season could have ended that day. I listened to Denny call that walk off as my Dad and I were driving to Hutchinson to build a rocket. That's one of the most glorious things about baseball for me, I don't know if I would have remembered moments like those without the Royals in the background. My childhood was difficult at times, but Denny and Ryan and the Royals futility were one of the only consistent things I had - and hey, occasionally they won a game too, sometimes 60, in fact!

4. GMDM's first game as the Royals GM. I remember how excited the Scout site was that we picked up someone who bypassed THE RED SOX to come here. I walked the dogs with my Mom that night (the person who made me fall in love with baseball & the Royals) and she talked about the poetic justice that we poached someone from the organization that stole Schuerholz and Leibrandt, and how fitting it was that someone from her 2nd most hated franchise (behind the Yankees) could take us to prominence again. That day, Moore watched the Royals go on this crazy comeback against the A's (of all teams) to win by something like 16-12. "It's a good omen" my Mom said. How right she was.

5. Opening Day, 2007. Dayton Moore was going for it. He got Gil Meche, called up Alex Gordon, the third baseman and second coming of George Brett, and the Royals smashed the Red Sox 7-1 as Gil pitched 7 and 1/3rd badass innings. This came at a good time, the Jayhawks just dropped a disappointing game in the E8 against UCLA, but Moore and Gordo were going to take the Royals to the top again. Moore may have had a false start when he "went and gritted for it" in 07-09, but how right that sentiment became. I cursed both Gordo and Moore several times through the coming years, but what their perseverance and comeback story did for this city was pretty much a ripoff of a Disney movie (and every bit as magical). Gordon now sits as my all time favorite player, and it's why his gold laced jersey now sits in my closet.

It was a long journey, but these gentleman made it worth it a million times over. Even if they never get there again, they did something I thought they would never do in my lifetime, and I will be forever thankful.

So, High Fidelity is probably my all-time favorite movie. I'm into top 5 lists...

1) Brett 3,000. As a kid who grew up in Central MO and chose the Royals as his team because of George Brett (and my dad's strong dislike of St. Louis people), Brett picking up that 3,000th hit was the highlight for me until 2014.

2) 2003 season. It didn't make sense and it ended in disappointing fashion, but it made the summer fun.

3) The 94 winning streak. Incredibly fun team to watch, and really think they could have done damage in the postseason had they made it. Apes and Cone, man...

4) Greinke's Cy Young year. Kind of a primer/warm-up for the current success. Showed The Royals KC would care if given a reason (same with the All-Star Game)

5) Sabes' no-no. One of the first games I remember listening to with my dad.

Honorable Mention: Anything Bo Jackson. My first in person game, he hit a triple. Watching him run will always stick with me. Amazing.

My first Royals game was in 1982, Dennis Leonard pitched against the Yankees. Frank White had a late clutch hit to win and has been my favorite player ever since. I was in Kindergarten. My dad who grew up a Mickey Mantle fan in OK also became a Royals fan that day.

Listening to the KC feed today. Talking about Cain this year... "..we want to make sure Cain is abel...", twice no less, and never realizing what it sounds like to the listener.

It was more informative and tolerable last year to listen to the opposing announcers, especially in the Central. Our radio and TV guys are unlistenable.

The Royals broadcasters are great for the casual fans just getting into baseball. If you want actual informative baseball discussion, we are dead last. And there are some bad commentators out there.

If I wrote that movie - here are two more lists for Jack Black and that other dude to banter about:

Best fruit rock bands: Moby Grape, Peaches and Herb, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Bananarama, etc.

Unholy super groups (name combinations): Blood Sweat & Tears for Fears, Blind Faith No More, Clint Black Sabbath, etc.

How have I never heard of the band called Isotopes?! Punk rock and sing about baseball. Even have a great song called "The ballad of Rey Ordonez."

Here's "The legend of George Brett."
