Yeah, he was one of the few true professional baseball players on the team during those years.

Maybe it's the Royals fan in me, but as much as I love analytics, I have never once gotten the love for predictions and forecasts.

I think we will have a winning record, and the idea the twinks will win more than us sounds laughable.

Strap in boys. I see one more wild ride that may result in a flurry of new hat purchases.

It cracks me up seeing new Royals merchandise being worn here in Oklahoma. Can't ever talk baseball with any of these fans due to them not knowing who the players are. Drives me nuts.

Thanks for reinforcing a jerkoff BFiB narrative, bubster.

We're only 1 year removed from a World Series Championship, Make the most of it. I think we might have a pretty good starting 5. The return of Moose, plus All-Star Hosmer on a contract year, not to slight Mr. Cain in the least, Gordo raking it as far as spring training, I see Salvy as always providing leadership?...what could go wrong? The newbies need to come through. So, buckle down for a great season...
Hopefully, it's another wild ride to the ship! |

So.. wasn't Orlando pretty damn good last year? Why are so many fans so quick to just write him off as needing replaced?

tl;dr sample size protected Orlando's shortcomings from becoming apparent.

I think most of the statheads saw Orlando's "pretty damn good year" for what it was: batting average only.
At face value the guy put up a .302 batting average. Great right? Well ya i guess. Except that in 485 plate appearances he only walked 13 times (as opposed to 105 Strike outs). So he's a free swinger, we can live with that if he's smacking the ball around. Except he really wasn't. with a .302 BA he still only managed a .405 slugging percentage.... That's just empty... lots of singles. 105 out of 139 hits to be exact. For being a career year, he OPS'd .734. The league average was .744. So he was basically a slightly below average player during a year that he did much better than anyone expected him to do. He's also 31 years old and has made some boneheaded plays in the field. I don't think most people have written him off. It's just that he isnt the type of player you hand a Corner Outfield spot expecting great things.

Last year he had a BB% of 2.7%. Among players with > 150 PA's last year he is third from last. He had an OBP of .329, which is okay, solely because his bat never really slowed down. As soon as he runs into a less favorable spell at the plate, it won't be pretty. He has no fall back if his .380 BABIP from 2016 dips down a little bit. I think he is a perfect 4th OF. He has blazing speed and can hold his own on the basepaths. My hope is that Soler can essentially be the "anti-Paulo" (and that isn't a knock on Paulo). The fact of the matter is today's game suddenly relies on power. Soler needs to provide run production at minimum 10-15% above league average for us this year. Paulo can't do that, but he can be a good situational guy in the late-innings. Last edited by C3HIEF3S; 03-24-2017 at 02:44 PM.. |
