A Smithville man who was found in someone else’s Jeep and then died in a struggle outside Arrowhead Stadium Sunday had gone to the game in a similar vehicle that was parked nearby, police said Tuesday.

The Jeep also showed no signs of a break-in, leading police to believe it may have been left unlocked when Kyle Van Winkle, 30, climbed in and sat down.

Police released the additional details Tuesday as they continued to investigate what led to the death of Van Winkle, who had attended the Chiefs game against the Denver Broncos with relatives.

Detectives planned to interview relatives Tuesday to determine when they last saw him inside the stadium.

Police were called to Lot A of the Truman Sports Complex about 5:20 p.m. Sunday on a disturbance. Witnesses told police the Jeep owner had returned to his vehicle with his son, who is about 10 years old, when they realized a stranger was inside. The boy summoned help from several tail-gaters and they engaged in a struggle with Van Winkle, who had been sitting in the Jeep. Van Winkle collapsed and later died at a hospital.

Police did not say how Van Winkle died, but they said his body bore no signs of obvious injury.

Officers arrested three men shortly after the death, but they had to track down the fourth man who was arrested. Police searched one man’s home in Independence on Monday.

Detectives released three of the men Monday night and the fourth man Tuesday morning, pending further investigation.

That's what I'm skeptical too as well. Something out there doesn't add up. From the medical staff that said on the online news, there was no obvious signs of a struggle, assuming we take their word for it. So if there was no struggle, then something just all together doesn't add up.

It's out there because that's how people have interpreted the police report, which is not at all definitive about what happened and is based on the word of the shooter or stabber or whatever happened. He's in custody with 2 others and I'm not sure can be considered credible at this point.

I don't know what happened, but the whole story seems a little odd to me.

it's the most logical guess at the moment. No one knows yet. Stupid people make stupid choices in desperate times. I'm not seeing much else that makes sense. He wasn't looking for a place to take a nap and wasn't stealing stuff to put food on the table for his kids. Addicts do some unexplainable and very stupid things to get their next fix

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — One person was killed and three people taken into custody after an altercation Sunday in the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs were inside playing the Denver Broncos.

Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp told The Associated Press that the incident was being treated as a homicide but that no arrests had been made. Snapp said the victim had returned to his vehicle to find a stranger inside it and a struggle ensued.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was found lying unconscious on the pavement, Snapp said. Paramedics began administering first aid before the man was transported to the hospital, where he died. His name was not immediately released.

"Talking to several witnesses that were out here in the parking lots, there was an individual who came back to his vehicle, saw someone inside the vehicle that did not belong. A struggle ensued between the two. That's when the individual collapsed," Snapp said.

Snapp said the man had his son with him when he returned to his vehicle and that the boy — whose age was not immediately known — had run for help when the struggle began.

Snapp said there were no obvious indications of how the man died.

"We don't know if the person had a health condition, had a heart attack. We don't know," Snapp said. "We're going to investigate this as a homicide until we hear differently. Right now it's a suspicious death but we are going to investigate it as a homicide."

Chiefs spokesman Ted Crews said the team is aware of the incident but cannot comment further because of the police investigation.

Flashing lights from ambulances and police cars were visible across the Arrowhead Stadium parking lot as cars tried to leave after the game.

The death came one year to the day after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, on Dec. 1, 2012, at a home not far from the stadium. Belcher then drove to the team's practice facility and committed suicide in front of then-coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.

In September 2012, a gunman attacked a Kansas City Royals employee in the same parking lot, which services Kauffman Stadium as well. The gunman shot the employee once in the abdomen and then returned to his vehicle and committed suicide.

Snapp said police were speaking to several witnesses after Sunday's incident, and that three people had been taken to the Kansas City Police Department's headquarters for questioning.

"Everyone was very cooperative when we got here," he said. "Everyone that we believed was involved is still here and we're talking to them. Right now they're persons of interest. Like I said, until we find out exactly how this person passed away, we're going to investigate it as a homicide. They're not suspects right now until we find out exactly what happened."

I read on here the dead guy was shot and I've read stabbed. News and police report say no obvious cause of death but two people were found on the ground unconscious. Odd story.
