Retirement

Do you old folks have a retirement plan in place? How much money will you have saved for your retirement? I'm 60 and it's weighing on my mind. I'm wondering if I'm going to have enough retirement $ saved up.

I found this interesting enough to come back and make a post. Depending on where you are getting your information 56%-80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and have less that 1k in savings. The next economic downturn should be interesting as the homeless problem right now is already out of control. I don't understand people that don't save and invest even if it's very small amount. I am 55 and could retire now if I was selfish. I certainly could retire when I sell this business but it's not about me as much as wanting to set up my son to the best of my ability. I am also an entrepreneur so I don't ever see myself fully retiring.

I don't get the whole problem with kids in this thread. My son was the greatest gift my wife and I have ever received and will do our very best to set up the next generation.

People without kids will rationalize their life being better, mostly with the false perspective of hearing other parents complain or being around kids and saying "they get all the good parts without any of the bad", etc.

People with kids are generally happy with their decision for many reasons, plus people in general look back on things as not being as bad as they actually were at the time, which I'm sure helps when looking back on not sleeping for the first two years of a kid's life, etc.

tl;dr, people are idiots.

But won't people with kids also rationalize their life being better?

Not that I have an opinion either way, I don't think no kids or kids is inherently right or wrong, better or worse. I do think a lot of people in life do things without really thinking about it, or because, you know "that's what people do".

To have kids without really considering if it's right for you is probably the stupidest thing you can do.

Some people have kids for all the wrong reasons as well. They put very little time and effort into them and then wonder why they have problems and cost so much, especially later in life. I have a friend who came to me the other day saying he was thinking of having a second child. I'm thinking to myself you are doing a terrible job raising the first one which has all kinds of problems already and Consuelo is the one that your child spends all her time with. Why in the hell would you want another one?

Just super busy running my business and doing my best to be a good husband and father. Crazy busy. Haven't even watched much football in the last two years. Maybe 3 games. I certainly couldn't have an informed discussion with you about the present state of the Chiefs anymore.

Kids or no kids. Either is fine, depending on what you want. I have two kids, and I can tell it this way. Life before kids was awesome. I did pretty much whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Now, with two teenagers, I can't imagine my life ever without kids. I like my life better, can still pretty much do whatever I want, just not whenever I want to. And honestly, if it isn't with my kids, I generally don't want to do it too much. Life with kids, for me anyway, is much better than it was without kids. Something about having more of a purpose maybe. I don't know.

Well hopefully that. slows down and you can at least check out some Chiefs football. Great time right now to be a fan and watch!

Hope things are good with you otherwise. Hope to see you around.

You have to do it for all the right reasons for sure. If you don't have the means to do it right I wouldn't suggest it. That said it's the best decision I ever made. My son is thriving and I couldn't be more proud. Like Dane I waited until later in life to get all the wild side out. We also sacrificed an income so my wife can be a stay at home wife until he can get around himself.

It really is that 'what is the purpose of life' question at the core. Sure, everyone should have as many awesome experiences and enjoy their time on this earth to the best of their ability. You're going to die some day and it really might be tomorrow. If kids cramp your style, so be it, less people should be having them, not more.

But your kids are your real legacy. Your part in shaping their life is how you really make your mark on the world in a meaningful, lasting way. And in a way you and your memories stay alive as long as they do. If you don't have them, then you don't fully understand it. They just make you feel whole.

But they sure as shit don't help you save for retirement. $13,000 in childcare expenses for one kid last year. More than my mortgage. I know I'm definitely sacrificing my comfort in my older years to be able to afford the sort of lifestyle I want for my family at present time.

Shit, by 2060 there will probably be wonderful advancements in cardboard housing technology and a can of cat food will be genetically engineered to taste like prime rib. Here's hoping at least.

People without kids forget sometimes that people WITH kids, used to live without kids and know what that was like.

My life was more "fun" in many ways before I had kids, but my life has much more PURPOSE now. Kids are a pain in the ass sometimes, but they're worth every bit of it.

My retirement plan has nothing to do with leaving my kids a bunch of cash when I'm gone.....and everything to do with the ability to take care of myself and retire while I'm young enough to enjoy the remainder of my days. I'll work hard to give them opportunity and try to make them good, dependable, responsible, well adjusted humans as adults.

During the hard times when I was a kid, I saw my dad killing himself to provide for us; very selfless my parents were. Now, I think it's pretty awesome seeing them retired and living the dream.

Banks have it both ways I guess - first, they pay crap for interest in savings and second they screw you to death on home loans. It's always a win-win for them.
