Report: Chiefs leaning towards franchise tagging Sneed

Multiple sources tell me the Chiefs are trending toward using the franchise tag on star corner L'Jarius Sneed.

I'm told while nothing is 100 percent at this stage, the likelihood of Sneed being tagged is "75-80 percent."

He doesn’t really seem to acknowledge/appreciate the fact that the decision to trade/keep Sneed is about both trade compensation and cap space. “A 2nd and a 4th is a horrible trade for the best man cover corner in football” is overly simplistic. If that’s the best offer available, and Sneed’s demands and cost are excessive, it’s probably worth making the trade. Alternatively, if Sneed is motivated to stay in KC, and a deal can be done that fits within the Chiefs cap structure, it’s probably worth rejecting such a trade.

Ironically, approaching this as “first rounder or bust” would likely end up with the Chiefs overpaying Sneed, and thereby having little to no resources to commit to offence, which is seemingly what he wants the most.

Just trying to weight the two options out, and I land on Option B.

The factors I considered:
- He was good his first 3 years, and was ELITE this past year, so much so that he was essential for us to win the AFCCG and get to the SB.
- He had a nagging knee injury this past year.
- He will cost 18-20MM against the cap the next 3 years if we sign him, which could mean letting upper-mid-level talent walk in '25/'26
- We have a ton of young talent in our DB room
- Veach & co are top-tier drafters relative to the rest of the league
- We desperately need a talent infusion in the WR room, and this would allow us to pursue that.

I think another aspect here is that Nick Bolton be Creed Humphrey will need to be paid. Possibly Trey Smith as well but he's a luxury. I don't think they can fit Bolton, Creed and Sneed together.

True but an NFL player only has a short window to make money so Hill went for the gusto and won in the paycheck department.

I understand a player going to a lesser team if it means they will get paid handsomely.

No, Jones is our Reggie White. There is no replacing. Ad for Sneed he'll be replaced by Williams. Watson is capable as well. We good.

Nate Taylor says tonight on their podcast that there’s no way it’s going to be a first round pick. The draft class is viewed too strong and the impending contract hurts the return value too.

It’s gonna be a 2 + at best.

Those of you expecting a first will likely be disappointed. As you were when Peter’s was traded. The market dictates value not your feelings about sneed.

While I agree with him, he also said we might get McLaurin for a 3rd. So when it comes to trade compensation, I take him less seriously than almost anyone.
