Chiefs trying to trade Justin Houston

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Chiefs talking to teams about trading OLB Justin Houston.

We doubt they're successful. Houston turned 30 last month and carries an exorbitant $21.1 million cap hit. If the Chiefs don't find a trade partner, they're fully expected to release Houston, especially with Dee Ford likely coming back on either a big-money deal or the franchise tag. Houston's play has slipped in recent years, but he can be an effective sub-package rusher off the edge

He told Mahomes - end zone or throw it away. Which makes sense since we probably couldn’t click it. But the Pats had everyone several yards into the end zone.

Houston is worth more than a 3rd rounder. He is still a great player and should put up at least 10 sacks next year.

Yeah, SF was my first thought.

With Buckner and Thomas, they have the beginnings of a good DL. Sherman still has some gas in the tank and I think Whitherspoon and their other young CB are solid. They have a decent OL and with Kittle and Goodwin some decent targets.

The Rams have a 2 year shelf-life and the 49ers aren't that far from running them down if they stumble a bit with that volatile mix of personalities.

The problem, and it's a significant one, is that they run a 4-3. You don't trade for Houston to bury Armstead (who's 5th year option they just picked up and who had a solid season) and they're no more convinced than we are that he could play SAM or be worth the money.

He's a personnel/cap fit, but is he a scheme fit? Seems unlikely.

I still think that the Bucs could be a good fit if they're switching to the 3-4 under Bowles.

Veach says they expect Speaks and KPass to both fit the new scheme much better. Obviously moving on from Houston and expecting these two to step up.

From what Google says he didn't.

I thought they ran a 34? Salah (sp?) is their DC, thought he was a 34 guy.

I think they're gonna look to trade for a WR, OBJ maybe. So that might take them out of the running.

Maybe the Jets, Cards maybe?

Because they might get released and not make as much as if they take a restructure. It's purely a business decision.

I just don't see it. The guy is so tall and has poor knee bend. Tackles are going to get underneath and push him around all day long.

It certainly is mostly on Ford, for the stupidity factor, and worth mentioning when talking about accountability for the loss. In spite of the defense, which Ford is part of, playing so crappy as you mentioned, the fact is KC had the lead. If Dee lines up correctly, KC is in the Super Bowl.

You're smarter than this. It's not a paycut. It's a renegotiation of a contract that is virtually worthless, given how easy it is for them get out from under it.
