Amazon Prime Video

Not sure this deserves it's own thread, but damn, there is a lot of outstanding content on Amazon. I've had it for years and never really gave it a shot. The HBO and Funny or Die catalogues alone make it worth the while. The originals are simply value added. I've been watching:

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Eastbound and Down
Zach Morris is Trash

Things in my queue:

Man in the High Castle
The Tick
Sneaky Pete
Jack Ryan

Would like to re-watch:

Sopranos
Between Two Ferns
Justified
Parks and Rec

Anything you'd recommend from Prime Video? I feel like a kid in a candy shop (without the requisite time to actually enjoy all the candy...)

Man, I'll tell ya, what's going on now is absolutely brutal. Everyone everywhere is out of parts, whether it's Seymour Duncan pickups or computer parts or even guitar bodies. I ordered a body from Warmoth on February 6th that just arrived 10 days ago and retailers everywhere out here are out of stock on so many items and my computer issues are well documented.

In the long run, this "short term pain" will seem like short term pain but for the next 18 months or so, it's going to be painful, not only because of the price but because of availability.

The availability issue is screwing up everything, at least where I live.

No, I mean Amazon ships it same day I order, I get it next day or day after.

Yeah, it sucks. Though I've seen guitars and guitar parts showing back up that weren't available before. So that end of it may come back sooner than the chip shortage issues.

Maybe, although as I mentioned earlier, my best friend is about to go out of business because he can't find any items to sell because everything is on back order.

I swapped pickups on six of my guitars in the past few months and the guys at Duncan were and are still working 6 days a week. I was fortunate enough to have a relationship with Seymour and the other guys so I was able to get my parts a lot more quickly than a dealer but I still had to wait for weeks on a few items.

And don't even get me started on the price of lumber. We're about to do an expansion of our home and a sheet of plywood is $90 dollars or more. My A/V guy was out last month to do some work here and he lost his home in the fires last Fall. He said that his insurance is barely covering the cost to rebuild his home because lumber is sky high. Not only that but the appliances he wants are 9 months backordered.

And people were worried about toilet paper...

Expect the cost of anything Aluminum to go up. Here's an excerpt from an email i received the other day from Wheel Pros (You may know them as American Racing).

Quote:
Aluminum pricing has increased significantly over the last eight months and it continues to hit new highs. As of today, raw aluminum pricing has increased upwards of 80% from .87 cents to $1.60 per pound (delivered) for A356 mid-west prime. We have seen this type of increase around the world at all our manufacturing facilities. All in all, our costs for raw materials have skyrocketed.

Consider yourself lucky. That happens about once in 5 orders for me. Most everything takes several days just to leave the warehouse anymore. Walmart is a better deal. Heck if one of my local stores has it in stock, they'll deliver it in a half hour.

My reproduction sheetmetal supplier told me the other day that, while the cost to produce their sheetmetal parts hasn't gone up significantly, the cost to ship them overseas has.

Most aftermarket metal body panels are produced in Taiwan. According to my guys, the cost to ship on a cargo container overseas has gone up 800%.

Heh. I Just re-read that American Racing email. They mentioned the issue with overseas containers too.

Quote:
Additionally, we continue to battle for availability on containers and it’s a daily negotiation to secure them. We have seen our average container pricing double over last year and we are on pace for it to be triple currently. We were hoping to see stabilization with container pricing, but now expect this issue to continue through the end of the year. As summer comes to an end, we are anticipating inventory issues on containers around Christmas for not just Wheel Pros, but by all large retailers, which could potentially create further issues.
To put that in perspective, those are two of the biggest aftermarket/muscle car manufactures (Dynacorn and American Racing) telling you that costs to ship has skyrocketed, coupled with an increased demand/cost for raw materials.

They're telling me this stuff because they're effectively warning me about an incoming price increase.

I've received several of these types of emails from several different manufactures. All saying the same kinda shit essentially.

I question if Amazon actually has some of this in stock, regardless of what they say.

The shortage is real.

Wait, wut?

You mean stockpiling TP isn't enough. Now I have to fill my garage with spare lumber and extra appliances?

COVID really changed everything, from the way people shop to the way we eat to the way we exercise to the way we work. Companies just can't keep up with the demand and there's been an explosion in home gym equipment from Pelaton, Tonal, Echelon, Horizon and so many others.

Prices just keep increasing due to shortages but it's not stopping people from purchasing items in stock. My best friend has owned his own Pro Audio/Musical Instrument online business since 1999 and he's about to go under because he can't get product. I mentioned in a related thread that computer parts are sky high right now as well and there's no end in sight, especially with the chip shortage. I paid $179 plus tax for a dopey GeForce 1030 Graphics card, which was $49 dollars a year ago but if I wanted to complete my computer, I didn't have any choice but to purchase the card at that price.

My biggest fear is that once people have become accustomed to paying 30% more for items is that those prices will never come down again, even after there's plenty of stock. It really feels like a slippery slope and I sure as hell hope I'm wrong.

Good info. Thanks. I’ve been buying a pile of junk online for years because I live in BFE. And frankly, regarding COVID, after a couple months life was largely back to normal here. This whole madness is still... weird for me.

Steel did that last fall. Apparently a local electrical supplier had no wire. None. Not 110 wire. Big ass 3 phase wire. That never happens.

Shits weird.
