Report: Chiefs leaning towards franchise tagging Sneed

Multiple sources tell me the Chiefs are trending toward using the franchise tag on star corner L'Jarius Sneed.

I'm told while nothing is 100 percent at this stage, the likelihood of Sneed being tagged is "75-80 percent."

oBJ has had 2 major injuries and hasn't been good since 2019. McDuffie looked bored covering his old ass.

In 2023, Sneed had by many measures his best season since he joined the Chiefs as a fourth-round draft pick in 2020. Sneed covered the opponents' top receiver on at least 65% of the snaps a league-high seven times during the regular season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats data.

Only once was any of those receivers able to catch more than two passes. Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders had five catches for 73 yards on seven targets against Sneed in a Week 12 game.

Sneed, 27, didn't allow a touchdown catch as the nearest defender in coverage all season until the Chiefs' divisional round playoff win over the Buffalo Bills.

In the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, Sneed lined up against Zay Flowers 21 times. Sneed allowed one catch for 54 yards, but later in the game made one of the biggest plays of the game by knocking the ball from Flowers just before he crossed the goal line. The Chiefs recovered the fumble in the end zone.

In 57 regular-season games, Sneed has 10 interceptions and 40 passes defended. He has one interception and seven passes defended in 13 postseason games.

He’s such a big part of basically eliminating the other teams best skill player. Really think I’d prefer to keep him over Jones.

He is a huge part. The question is who is easier to replace, Jones or Sneed?

We lose Sneed and we still have McDuffie and have a GM/coaching staff who draft and develop CBs very well.

We lose Jones and his replacement is .........? Elite DTs are far harder to replace and cover for and the loss of Jones would be more felt in my opinion.

As I said earlier, I think it's the trade they will end up accepting (if that 2 is in the 1st half of the 2nd round). I won't jump up and down about it, but I'll understand if they accept it and understand if they don't accept it. If it's a 2 and a 3, I'll be happier. If it's a 2 by itself, I'll be less happy.

I just don't see much chance that the deal is done and this board is popping bottles of champagne. I don't think Sneed is that type of clear cut player that teams are going out of their way to overpay for in a way that will make us warm and fuzzy about it. He clearly deserved an All Pro and a Pro Bowl nod, but the fact that he got neither is just some small indication that his star is super bright but teams will be negotiating off of that dimmed value. And that gets me to a 2 and a 4 of what I think he'll go for.

What's his value? I'm not sure that matters. An early 2 and an early 3, I think? Which gets you to a late-ish 1/early 2? That would be pretty satisfying.

Dont think Veach will pay a corner. If we can get a 2 and a 4 I am fine with it. Would love to get a 1, but don't think that will happen. Sneed may do something like 3 for 50 with 40 guaranteed, but unlikely. I think we will spend more on offensive weapons with our luck hitting on DB's. Going to be a fun 3-4 weeks.
