That’s not on Bob.

Once again it’s the player. And that’s embarrassingly bad for Hitchens.
No, sorry. There were only 2 linemen on the field. Moving them around just moves the holes around. There wasn't much Hitchens can do there.

This is what the play looked like before the audible.

The Patriots went with an empty formation. That was absolutely the right defensive alignment to stop that play. It’s like you guys went brain dead and forgot that Edelman, Gordon and Hogan were beating our DB’s downfield. Oh and some guy named Gronk is lining up too. I’m told Bob is a brain dead mongoloid bc he wouldn’t double cover him, except that’s what he was doing on this defensive design.

Not one player on this defense did anything when they audibled. Nothing. Change the allignment to adjust, call a timeout. DO SOMETHING.

We've already gone over and over the coverage of Gronk. He had 1 catch going into the final drive. Hogan was absolutely killing them at that point and Bob took a gamble that didn't work. There wasn't much he could do - if Edelman didn't get them, White would have. Or Hogan. Or Gronk. Sutton did what he though he had to do and it failed on that one play.

This play is much the same argument. There were 2 down linemen on the field. There wasn't anything the players could do to avoid a mismatch. There simply wasn't enough beef up front. Changing the alignment only moves the gaping hole to the right or left, there's still going to be a gaping hole.

As usual, if you want to pick out individual plays, you could make a case against Sutton or make a case against the players, depending on which plays you choose.

The bottom line is that they're all to blame at this point - Veach, Reid, Sutton, the players - all of them.

Your defense isn’t going to be able to make many audibles or changes when 5 of the players have played like 20 snaps together.

Look at the good defenses around the league. It’s talent and cohesion

Yeah, fine, but there are still plenty who aren't on worst-ever paces. So maybe we can be like them?

Back in the days before the season started and the homers were in their peak form, the talent on this D was vastly overrated. The fact is there isn't a whole lot. BUT - there's definitely more than a small handful of teams, and yet none are as outright putrid as ours. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

WTF is Chiefs Wire?

Seriously the first time I’ve ever heard that site. Has it been around for awhile?

The Chiefs are tackling poorly at every level of the defense

The bottom line

There have been a lot of calls for Sutton’s job this week — and those calls are not without merit. But firing Bob at this point in the season isn’t going to cure poor tackling at every level of the defense. Firing Sutton doesn’t magically make the Chiefs’ best coverage linebacker’s putrid 28.9 percent success rate in coverage improve. And firing Sutton definitely doesn’t get Justin Houston and Eric Berry on the field — and playing up to their massive contracts.

Is it time to panic and make desperation moves for just this year? I contend that we’re not there just yet.

This defense very clearly is missing a leader — either on or off the field. They seem to be rudderless, and in need of some fire and attitude — something that General Manager Brett Veach thought he’d brought in through his free agent and draft acquisitions. Even with those acquisitions, this team still doesn’t have a foundation — a go-to when times are tough — that they can lean on to get things right again.

Quite frankly, the defensive mentality appears to be soft. Does Eric Berry’s return fix that mentality? It certainly doesn’t hurt.

Are there moves that Veach can make to try to shore up a soft interior — particularly in pass coverage? Definitely.

Is it time to panic and make desperation moves for just this year? I contend that we’re not there just yet.

This defense has had six weeks to play together — and this week, they leaned on three safeties that weren’t on the roster when the preseason began.

The inside linebackers look slow to diagnose and react — something we should probably expect from two players who haven’t played together before this year, and one who is being asked to handle a completely different set of gap responsibilities than he has in prior seasons.

The secondary is still practically learning each other’s names — let alone the full array of responsibilities that have to flow between them.

And the two highest-paid premium players the Chiefs have on the defensive side of the ball are injured.

There’s reason to hope that this Chiefs defense can turn around, and be at least mediocre. It’s not unfathomable to think that with time on the field together — and a couple more healthy bodies — this team could come up with the requisite number of stops to allow the high-flying offense to win games big.

Unfortunately, in the meantime, we’re stuck with this poor excuse of a defense — a defense that lacks an identity.

anyone who is over 65 years old should not have a job like Sutton's, this is the year 2018, and we aren't using common science to determine someone is not mentally fit to run such a cutthroat job? WHAT THE ****?
