Chiefs trying to trade Justin Houston
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Chiefs talking to teams about trading OLB Justin Houston.
We doubt they're successful. Houston turned 30 last month and carries an exorbitant $21.1 million cap hit. If the Chiefs don't find a trade partner, they're fully expected to release Houston, especially with Dee Ford likely coming back on either a big-money deal or the franchise tag. Houston's play has slipped in recent years, but he can be an effective sub-package rusher off the edge https://www.rotoworld.com/football/n...as-city-chiefs https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/n...carr-and-more/ https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2019/...justin-houston |

When you're trying to get people to trade for a guy, you don't need a dozen teams that want him - you only need two. Yes, teams know that the Chiefs aren't one of those two, but they don't know who might be. If you can talk to a team that wants a player who also knows that YOU want that player, sure - that's a little easier. But if you can convince the league that there are a couple teams that may want the guy that AREN'T you, that's just as good. You still get people actively trying to acquire him. The bottom line is that Houston was still one of the best 100 or so players in the league last year - he wasn't peak Houston but he was still very good. And there are cash spending requirements that some teams are going to struggle to get to. So they can acquire a guy that still demonstrated, especially in the playoffs, that he has gas left in the tank. The cap simply doesn't matter for a half dozen or more teams in the league right now, especially not the year 1 figure. So if they can get Houston in there to fill up some of that cash spending requirement while also getting a good player, they'd be well served to do so. Their alternative is to overspend on lesser players. I don't think the market for him will be super-robust, no. I don't think you're going to get teams offering their 1st. But an early 4 or late 3 isn't out of the realm of reason. Moreover, all it takes is one squad that's really interested in him to move that up to an early 3 or late 2. The market is a funny creature. Every year somebody goes into FA and gets twice what you'd figure because there were just squads that wanted the guy. And while Houston's $21 million figure is prohibitive for us, in large part due to other good players we need to pay for, a $14 million figure WON'T be prohibitive for other teams. $14 million for a single season of a top 100 player isn't out of bounds at all. Teams would gladly give that for Ford, IMO, and Ford is nowhere near as well rounded a player as Houston is. Moreover, Houston's versatility and pass-rush productivity (even if he isn't able to finish as well as he once did) will make him a rare commodity on the market. He knows this and his agent knows this, that's why they won't renegotiate his deal. Houston's still a very good, steady, productive player. And he's an excellent leadership presence. I think there will be a market for him and the Chiefs will be able to get a return that's a little better than some are assuming.

If someone offered you a mid to early 3rd, I'd take it and go my separate way. It sucks to lose him, as you said here, he's still a really good and valuable player. But as Bill does in NE, it's always better to get out a year early than a year late on these things. He may go elsewhere and have a nice 10 sack season, it is what it is. |

Just think about how much cap space was wasted on Berry the last two years. Or Houston for a couple years there with his knee issue. That cap space, we never get it back. Unless they take a pay cut of course, in which you get some relief. My point is, if Justin Houston never gets hurt and is still playing near his 2014 /2015 level, we aren’t even discussing this right now I doubt. But he did get hurt, he did occupy tons of cap space while doing nothing there for awhile, and now that the team could use some help from him financially to finally get over the hump, he’s ready to pack up and leave. Whatever, it’s his right. He can go make more money and never sniff a ring. That’s his call. |

But flip side, he got hurt, rehabbed and came back to play well for them. He didn't force them to sign him to a big contract. It happens. I just never blame anyone for not wanting to make the most out of their work. As much as "winning a ring" means to the fans, it's also important to the players. Just as is making what they conceive their worth. It's capitalism at it's finest. |

Berry an Houston
You bought it, made some money. Investment started to lose value, but didn't do anything at the time Investment lost more value and still holding on to it. Investment is guaranteed to be no higher than it is today. Sell, cut your loses and move on.

Yes, because no other player ever has taken less money for a good shot at a ring.

[QUOTE=suzzer99;14128131]I just wish Mahomes had ignored Reid's warning and thrown it to Williams in the flat on the play that started at :16. He was wide wide open and close to the sidelines at the 10.
What was Reid's warning? |

So say you take less money and don't win a ring. Then what?
Winning a SB is hard guys. There have been so so many good teams over the years that haven't won. Nothing is guaranteed. |

I think the Bears would be a good trade partner. But I'd want a 2nd from them.

Mahomes was looking end zone or bust the whole way because he was concerned about not being able to get the kick off if Williams were tackled in bounds. Tough break but A) defensible concern from Reid and B) Defensible decision from Mahomes. You absolutely cannot risk not getting that shot at overtime. Because if the Chiefs win the toss, they go the Super Bowl, I firmly believe that. The NE defense was toast by that point. Taking a shot at the back corner made sense especially when your window to shit or get off the pot on a throw with that kind of degree of difficulty will close in a heartbeat.
