*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

I'd like to see a play for Wood. Give him a shot at the rotation and if that doesn't work, move him to the pen.

I would rather we try him for an under-scouted, heat throwing starter that could make a difference in October.

If we can add Luke (which may be a longshot) and have either Hoch or Soria bounce back down the stretch with Strahm and Herrera playing the roles of the borgs, we start looking like a dangerous team in October.

The problem with Wood he's gonna command multiple years with a 7+ a year salary. And he's going to want to be a starter first and foremost before he likely ends up as an expensive Reliever (aka Soria part 2)

You can get much cheaper bullpen production.

Assuming, the starting rotation consists of Duffy, Kennedy, Vargas, Hammel, and Karns, there are five pitchers that should be locks for the pen;

Chris Young, Mike Minor, Joakim Soria, Matt Strahm, and Kelvin Herrera.

That leaves two or three spots in the pen.

There are three guys invited to training camp that are NOT on the 40 man roster and are trying to come back from an injury of some kind;

Brandon League (actually made the all star game as a closer),
Chris Withrow (only 27 years old), and
Bobby Parnell.

If one of these guys could successfully regain their previous form, the Royals wouldn't have as many question marks in the pen. The only issue, none are on the 40 man roster. A spot would have to cleared.

Or, they can always fall back on our old friend Jonathan Sanchez who is also invited to training came.

Romo is shot, IMO.

He was teetering close to a 1-pitch pitcher even when he was still having success and now that his slider has really flattened out, he's really a no pitch pitcher.

I don't think most folks realize that Romo's throwing 85 mph these days. If you don't have someone that can hang sliders and throw mid 80's cockshots in your system, you're in more trouble than you realize.

Romo's a downgrade for nearly any bullpen he steps into, IMO. He's closing in on really, really bad. I guess the AL can carry more of a ROOGY in their bullpen due to not needing as deep a bench but I still think he's a poor use of a roster spot.

His velocity is underwhelming, but he still been a very effective ROOGY reliever.

I expect Flynn will be one of those roster spots.

I like Karns quite a bit.

But Matt Strahm has some serious shit and honestly, the Royals may want to figure out a way to get him in that rotation ahead of Vargas. Vargas shouldn't be guaranteed a spot and if it's a head to head competition, it looks to me like Strahm can beat him.

His fastball backs up and that curve hits the right blinker about halfway to the plate and just dives at the right batters box. It reminds me a little bit of Jose Fernandez's bigger breaking ball. His changeup looks promising but could use a little more drop. The good news is that he has 10 mph of differentiation and the drop he is getting he's getting late enough to still be effective. If he could add a little bit more of that armside run that he gets from his fastball to it, it would be devastating against righties.

Strahm may have the best stuff in your staff, to be honest. It's hard to find 3 pitches with the potential to be that filthy.

A few times Strahm threw a devastating change up. Then the next one would be fairly flat. I'd imagine he will be working on that pitch the most. Hopefully he figures it out.
