While i don't necessarily disagree, but it's like any subject spanning decades and attempting to compare.

It's the golden era for an older generation. I grew up listening to Pac and Snoop, DMX etc. I owned all of Pac's albums. If not for Pac, i probably woulda never even gotten into rap.

But i'm also 38 years old.

Today's kids didn't grow up on that. It's an entirely different sound.

When you listen to young, up and coming artists now, and they're asked who their influences were growing up, no one is saying 2pac anymore.

You get a lot of "Chief Keef" answers. My son listens to King Von. Zero interest in 2pac etc.

The other main difference is that today's rap is a bit more grassroots. There's a lot more artists in the game producing 1-hit wonders and such thanks to social media.

You don't need a Death Row records and a Dr. Dre anymore to get your name out there.

So rather than having these big centralized artists backed by major labels, you have a lot more flavor and variety from an abundance of smaller artists.

You'll never produce another 2pac or Biggie because the music scene just isn't like that anymore.

Perfect example of what i mean: KC's own SleazyWorld Go. Yeah ive posted this before.

A total nobody when he splashed onto the scene. The beat is nothing more than a slowed down version of SpottemGottem's Beat Box.

30M Views later, the dude became one of the hottest young up and coming names. With the help of nothing but his homies.

Yeah he's never gonna go down in history like a 2pac. But what do i care? For this brief moment in time he captured lighting in a bottle and produced a banger. And there's a number of artists that may come and go just like him.

So long as the music keeps coming, i'll keep consuming. I don't have to wait a decade for Dr. Dre to release his next album.

I think it's actually the opposite. Rap is mainstream now where as in the 90s this wasn't the case until the start of the late 90s. Music is absolutely subjective I listen to newer stuff usually at the gym, 80/90s hip, R&B, Soul at home.

I know this doesn't fit each and every rap act today but I tend to think of rap as a "hardcore" type of music. This is something that is common in other types of hardcore music, especially fringe metal.

Not only is there good stuff out there now but in many cases, the really good stuff is innovative and new because they're not being constrained by record labels. There's a level of freedom in music now that simply did not exist before at least not until the 90's and even then, record labels were still interested in signing more music if they could sell it.

In many ways, it's like other media industries like video games - you still have the big AAA titles from the name studios but you also now have more indie offerings than ever before. There's literally a niche now, somewhere on the internet, for every musical taste under the sun.

And you're damn right about social media. My daughter makes it a point to tell me how many radio artists started on TikTok because the phenomenon is just so crazy.

We're the same age. Yeah it's different alot of producers don't sample because of clearances, records are usually shorter (Sleazy has protected this) alot of guys put out EP's instead of LP's.

I think something new and game changing will come along eventually. I think our society overall has just hit this blandness

What you're not considering is that the truly good, innovative artists, aren't signing with major record labels anymore. You're denying the existence of an entire scene that is independent and underground.

Which is why I laugh when idiots claim that “all music today sucks”. No, you’re just turning on the radio and hearing the same 6-8 songs on repeat. There’s way better stuff out there that you aren’t hearing.

A lot of artists are opting for doing more EP's. It's cheaper, it's less work, and it allows them to tour more, which is really the only way artists can pay their bills nowadays.

I just pushed play on Justyn Ross' workout video and it's got some song by some rapper named "Real Boston Richey".

Who the **** is that? Hasn't come across my radar, but maybe Ross is into him. Just another example of how many artists are in the scene.

Will "Real Boston Richey" ever be a 2pac? Probably not. But Ross enjoys him.

I always like to listen in to what the players are listening to in the locker room or at camp.
