It is funny how life (and death) works sometimes. I am generally healthy for my age but am a long time smoker. My doc had me take a CT Lung scan just last week and I got the results this morning. I smoke an average of ~15 cigs per day and have done so for 40 ( ) years. I have a small amount of scaring in my left lung but overall they look fine. Whew, that was good news!
My dad (non-smoker) is 21 years older than I am an still going strong. He hits 80 this year and fully expects to have another 10 years and I don't see any reason why he won't hit that goal. |

Sorry for your loss, man. That's tough. I'm younger than you, but I've been smacked in the face with "you're ****ing old, bitch" a lot recently.

A friend of mine, early 40s and in great shape, died while exercising (Aortic dissection). All the fitness in the world won't help you if you're genetically predisposed to certain conditions. Exercising is just a hedge.

The shit I have to go through just stay lean and strong is ridiculous. At this point no matter how hard I try I am still just a shell of my former self.

in all seriousness, so much of it is genetics. Unfortunately, there are so many things that can kill us, that it's pretty much impossible to test for them all. Sorry for the losses either way. Best we can do is minimize the risk factors that we KNOW increase our chances of dying early. BP, Smoking, drinking, etc. |

I've lost 100 lbs so far, I got a deal from my insurance company that had all these tests in a mobile bus. Got an electrocardiogram, put that dye into the heart artery's to see blockage etc. about 5 tests to make sure I didn't have ticking time bomb ready to go off with my heart. I think it cost me $160. Money well spent.

I use to be a chain smoker, about 50 cigarettes on an average day. In my 20's, my 30's, my 40's, my 50's I just would tell myself, I love smoking and I'll just die earlier than I would otherwise. Well earlier got here, I'm now 68, I did quit smoking 12 years ago at age 58. I had to use Chantax to quit, it's a great drug. No nicotine like gum or patches, it works on the sensors in the brain that crave nicotine.
When I was young I never went to the doctor, always felt good, except when I was hungover, I also drank about as much as I smoked, they go hand-in-hand. Now, I only drink wine on one night a week, on Friday's I play music. Since I quit smoking I've lost my appetite to drink, or drink as much. I've got a few problems but I'm actually doing good. Six months after I quit smoking my doctor sent me for a stress EKG and I found out there was a blockage. I had a stent put in my heart May 2007. I have to take a blood thinner pill the rest of my life, no big deal, but you do bleed very easily. When I moved to this retirement community about 8 years ago, I immediately signed up for the softball league. I played for five years, that's three 14 games seasons a year. I had to give it up after five years, I couldn't run anymore. I went to a pulmonary doctor and he said I had COPD, and I now have 3 different inhalers I use. One's a rescue and the two I take at various times of the day. Last year my cat-scan showed I had some problems with my lymph-nodes. I went to the hospital and they removed 3 bumps from my left arm pit. Now I have non-hodgkins lymphoma, although I'm not displaying anymore symptoms, it's something they check every six months. I also have diabetes II, I take a pill for that, but the biggest problem is I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet. They can hurt like hell at times, lately they been hurting a lot, mostly at night when I try to sleep. There is medication, Gabapentin, but it works by creating electrical charges in the brain. Unfortunately I have the side-effect that you can sleep walk. The last couple of times I was walking on the bed and fell off and hit my head, so now I can't even take that medication. I could go on, but my point is, when you're young, take care of yourself. I go to the gym 3 days a week, I play golf, softball is now out, but if I had done all this stuff when I was younger, I wouldn't have these problems today, as well as I should of never smoked. |

Life is so short and we spend most of our time working. We make an effort to enjoy life to the fullest. We travel quite a bit, and if there is something on our bucket lists we try to knock it out. I am not waiting for retirement to do so.
We do watch what we eat but we don't deny ourselves the foods that we really enjoy. We just do it in moderation. My wife's sister and husband are Vegan, (the pushy kind) Both of them are sickly and on medication. My wife and I are very healthy, very rarely get sick and take no medication. I always tell them it would suck to deny ourselves good food and die from something completely unrelated to diet. |
