Judo was my thing. My brother was national champion. Then he wrestled. He flipped his way to being state wrestling champ. The surprised look on his opponents faces as he tossed them over his shoulder was priceless.

I've trained off and on since about 2003. Probably more off than on. I quit when I went to law school. I rejoined, and then quit again 5 years ago. I've been regularly training for the last year. I'm pretty much terrible, but I'm a blue belt under Dustin Denes and I train at Bodyfit on 39th and Main.
I trained at Powell Sport and Combat in Columbia for a couple years while I was at Mizzou. It was a great gym, but more MMA focused. I did some MMA but mostly no gi jiu jitsu. Powell's was bought out by American Top Team, and that gym has got to be one of the greatest MMA gyms ever. Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, Mike Chandler, Mike Whitehead, Jake Hecht, and other fighters got started there. They would not remember me, but I remember them. Several really great jiu jitsu guys came out of there too. The Lenon brothers among them. Wade Rome owned the place and Keiko Frances taught. That was really a special gym. I trained for one semester in law school with Damian Hirtz. He was an excellent teacher, but life got in the way. I train at Bodyfit now, and it is just about the perfect jiu jitsu gym. I've trained off an on with these guys for years. The teachers are brown belts....but they are fantastic. I would put them against anybody. |

I've been on and off since 2003. I was fortunate enough to train in SD when it was the best place in the world to learn. I've learned under some of the best teachers in the world: Dean Lister, Tyrone Glover, Mike Fowler, Barret Yoshida, Saulo and Xande Ribeiro. I ranked up to Purple and life got in the way when I took an opportunity in San Francisco. There are really good schools up here but they cost waaay too much for me to justify only being able to go 1-2x a week due to adulting. Most of the guys I started with are now striped black belts. I still have books and books of notes with flow charts from different positions and the daily step-by-step lessons I took when I was in class. If anyone is looking to get better I highly recommend bringing a note pad and pencil to class or, if the teacher lets you, take videos of the lessons and watch them when you're not training.

When I start again I'll probably go on the light sparring days. However, Im old now and I'm far beyond they days of balls to the wall sparring for tourneys. Andre looks like the Hulk now. A few of my classmates went there when he moved up and one got his BB from Andre a couple of years back. Gratz on the blue, man. Thats the biggest step that most people don't ever get to. Its proof that you learned humility, respect, timing, patience and the beginning of technical techniques. |

Both my sons 15 & 18 have been Black belts for many years. My oldest is a Black belt in 2 forms of karate. Both took it in a real registered gym both certified oldest certified in weapons as well which is very interesting. Your comments are so true it provoked me to reply. 1) you're not tough ... this is so true when in a tournament or a big gathering there is always always someone that can kick your ass and further there is somebody there who can kick that persons ass. Some people eat drink breathe training there are also people naturally tough. 2) you have NO idea who is. This one is even more true than the first. I've been to a lot of big tournaments with my boys.. NYC Boston to name a couple and let me tell you in tournaments with 500 plus people there are always surprises. It might be the 13 yr old kid or the 65 yr old guy. It might be the middle aged lady who looks like the only thing she could tangle with is a buffet. The handicapped person the guy with the cane. So yeah your so damn right. My now 15 yr old was a Black belt at 13 he started a kiddie program at the gym when he was 6 and just kept on going. When he was 13 we used to have fun at parties if someone snickered that he was a Black belt. We'd say hold out your hand let my son grab your hand he knew every way to twist bend or simply move your hand/wrist/knuckles til you basically would cry uncle. Woman would fall to their knee.. guys would just scream swear words and say let go damn it. And yes my 13 yr old knew his limitations due to size/age. But working on someones hand was always a fun eye opener to the hands owner no matter the size. For both my boys i was always the home practice dummy before tests. Allowing 30+ moves alone on my hand in an hour would not help me to improve my writing skills. I do not want to end on that note. My kids grew up in the Gym and have become polite respectful individuals. My wife and I also had something to do with that I'd like to think. But my point is training if taught right makes you a well rounded person. Its good physically and mentally. The health benefits and being able to defend yourself are the Bonus. |
