What’s the story on Mechanical Keyboards?

Keyboard at the accountants office shit the bed. It’s one of mine. Hers was so damn wore out the keys would catch and it made me crazy so I got pissed and brought my own. It’s probably a decade old and shit the bed.

All that really only matters to the extent that I was looking at reviews of keyboards. Virtually all the sites mentioned several mechanical keyboards. Huh. Weird. Whatever. I got on the accounting subreddit and searched keyboards. Virtually all of those dorks recommended a mechanical keyboard other than a couple recommending a Logitech MX series.

So I have to question what’s so good about them? Im sure they’re better than the Apple IIE ones we had in school when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but I went to great pains to reduce the keystroke distance by buying a Surface Bluetooth keyboard at the farm and the house.

Best I can tell is the response time is a little better for gaming and some people like the tactile click of the switch. Which the tactile feel of the surface ones are good enough for me.

What am I missing?

Logitech has a keyboard (K375) and mouse (M720) that can run on either type of connection which is pretty cool.

I prefer wired overall though. The only reason I even keep a wireless set is for traveling and mostly I just use the mouse and the laptop's keyboard.
It was several years ago when I bought them but I ended up doing it because the shitbox router we had at the office was the same frequency as the router and it would nuke my internet connection.

I've been wireless for 20+ years. I'm not sure I could dive back into the wired game without being like WTF is this noise? Especially after the video of the noise posted above. I'm not sure I'm ready to go the mechanical game.

Love my Logitech K750 bluetooth solar keyboard. Best I've ever owned.

New devices using Bluetooth 5 do not have the issues you describe. I have the Logitech wireless G502 Hero, and even on Bluetooth it's the fastest and most accurate mouse I've ever used.

After using a quality wireless mouse for gaming over some time, a wired mouse just feels like it has a ball and chain attached to it. The difference is pretty crazy.

I've got three mechanicals, two Keychron models and a fancier WASD that I had custom made. If you're curious, I've been really impressed with the Keychron for their price (under a hundred bucks). I don't like the switches as much as what I have on the other, but they're still leaps and bounds better than a 'normal' keyboard these days.

The Keychron's are bluetooth but if you want you can plug them in via USB. The other thing I really like about the Keychron is the backlight on the keys without it looking like some really dumb RGB monstrosity.

And I'm still with you on the "bluetooth kind of sucks" take. I'm sure the number of BT devices I've got around contributes but it gets flaky.

Overall it's wild how mechanicals have come back. I remember when the only real option for a mechanical was the Tactile Pro and it was both ugly and expensive.
