Hypothetical: If you were aboard the Titanic.
Would you have lived or died? Find out here and I'll let you know.
Tell me if you want to be a man, or if you'll take on the role of either gender, and I'll roll the dice for you and assign you a real person who was on the ship.* (If you're a woman, let me know too and I can give you a female dice roll.) If you don't tell me, I'll assume you're a guy. I'll let you know the person's name, age, origin, embarkation point, destination, passenger class if they were a passenger, and their department and job if they were on the crew. In some cases we don't know so you'll get a blank, but the information is pretty good. Oh, and if you were a passenger your crew stuff will come back as unknown, and vice versa if you were crew. There was a small handful of people who were both passengers and crew. The ship's orchestra and the Guarantee Workers were the two groups listed in both classes. (Guarantee workers were the expert repair guys who were assigned to the maiden voyage to make repairs of anything new that was broken. They apparently didn't have expertise in major hull repairs.) You're then welcome to look up more detail about the person if you can find it. Some of them have interesting stories. So sign up in the thread and I'll let you know. * For some reason I'm missing a small number of people, but I've got about 98 percent of them in my database. If you died and your body was recovered, here are the ships that recovered you, based on your body ID number: MB – CS Mackay-Bennett (bodies 1–306) M – CS Minia (bodies 307–323) MM – CGS Montmagny (bodies 326–329) A – SS Algerine (body 330) O – RMS Oceanic (bodies 331–333) I – SS Ilford (body 334) OT – SS Ottawa [57] (body 335) If you survived, you can go here to see the story of your particular lifeboat. Hard lifeboats were labeled 1 through 16, and four collapsible lifeboats were labeled A through D. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifebo..._the_lifeboats Last edited by Rain Man; 02-16-2019 at 09:00 PM.. |

You were a tough one. You kind of survived two shipwrecks that night.
Name Thompson, Mr. John William Outcome Survived, Lifeboat A/14 Gender Male Age 42 Home Liverpool, England Embarkation Southampton Destination Unknown Passenger Class Unknown Crew Department Engineering Crew Crew Job Fireman/Stoker https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.or...-thompson.html You went into the water, and despite breaking your arm, you managed to latch onto Collapsible Lifeboat A, which was swept off the deck as the Titanic sank. Lifeboat A didn't get fully deployed, so it was about to sink (and people were dying of hypothermia aboard it since it was partially submerged), but the highly organized heroes of Lifeboat 14 pulled alongside and rescued you and a dozen other people.

The life of a saloon steward is short and dangerous, apparently. Your brother in law was also a worker on the ship, and he went down, too.

We don't know much about you, other than you didn't make it. I'm curious about your Montana destination.

Good news! They found your body!
You were a stationery buyer at a department store and you apparently traveled across the Atlantic often. I had no idea that the coal guys were that successful in getting on lifeboats. Those guys were survivors. You were actually on one of the earlier lifeboats, too. Apparently they put a bunch of women and kids on board, and you were in the front of the line when they asked for a few men.

I'll roll for myself now and see how it works out.
I made it! I was a successful Realtor returning from my honeymoon to New York in 1st class with my wife. We easily boarded Lifeboat 5 early in the process and apparently most of the people didn't even think it was a serious problem at that point. Even though I did nothing wrong, it sounds like there was some stigma against male survivors, though, which bothered me for a long time and I wouldn't talk about the sinking. https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.or...es-harder.html Name Harder, Mr. George Achilles Outcome Survived, Lifeboat 5 Gender Male Age 25 Home New York, New York, US Embarkation Cherbourg Destination New York, New York, US Passenger Class 1st Class Crew Department Unknown Crew Job Unknown

I'm developing a theory. I bet the upper class male passengers were still thinking about appearance, and it would be improper to get on an early lifeboat. They didn't know the extent. Meanwhile, those coal guys knew what was happening below decks and weren't really worried about their social standing. So they were climbing aboard without hesitation.
