Last one I played was Medieval II. Loved it, but don't game on PC anymore. Good luck, bro.

I thought about Medieval II since it's cheap but it's essentially a re-skin of Rome and uses the same engine. I'm looking at Thrones of Britannia too, it just came out and looks intriguing.

I've played them all except for Attila.
seems like Shogun2 taxes my PC the most, even more than TW:warhammer. I recommend either of those 2 games. TWWarhammer is amazing and has great units/battles but the campaign is shit. TWSHogun2 has my favorite campaign (rise of the samurai) but the game has fantasy units that don't fit the historical setting. no matter what TW game you decide on, you should look for mods and mod collections to iron out the gameplay issues that CA never got around to fixing.

How hard is it to mod via Steam? I'm actually going to be playing through Steam on an iMac. I haven't played TW for a few years but I used to play XGM on Mac years ago and modding it wasn't that hard.

Good memories going back to the original Shogun total war.
As the game got older, less emphasis was put on the real time battles, and the games suffered. I think the collision detection on Rome Total war was better than Shogun II or Empire... Not sure about Warhammer. Rome II's loading between the campaign map and battle screen was atrocious. Could just be my older PC though. Fun games from back in the day. Not a fan of the direction they took it overall though. |

They built a whole engine around the musket warfare of Empire TW and they're still basically using it. Melee battles are bizarre. Often times the animations of the unit matter more than their actual stats and ratings. Even now I prefer my modded versions of Rome and Medieval 2. |

Adds some factions, balances things, new music, ect. The one problem with Rome was the damn chariots broke the auto resolve so the Britons and Egyptians end up pwning everyone. |

I didn't play much vanilla so the chariots weren't much of a thing. I played the XGM mod for hundreds of hours. But like I said, I played it to death and want something a little different.

TWWH has Sync Kills. these unique animations are synced with the individual(s) models instead of just effecting a group/unit it's very easy for the 2 newest games. you subscribe to the mods using steam interface/menus. it does all the DL'ing and install. then, when I start the game, a game launcher wizard pops up. I select which mods are enabled in the launcher and start the game. steam also keeps everything updated and automatically downloads the latest patches for the mods.

Hmmmm, maybe I need to give Warhammer a try. It looks like it actually plays the best of all of them, it's just not a historical setting. Still kind of leery of signing up for Steam just for one game, I don't do a lot of PC/Mac gaming so it's just one more account to manage...

I'm a huge fan. I have played every single one until the Warhammers.
You can't go wrong with either Shogun 2 or Rome 2. I have the first of the Warhammers in my Steam library and will be undertaking that one very soon.
