What's wrong with the Bob Sutton scheme?
Set the talent level aside for a second. The scheme itself I contend is bunk. It appears to be a complete read & react defense. Sutton seems to "play not to lose" from a defensive aspect. Turnovers are what his scheme hinges on.
It just appears to be an indecisive scheme. Afraid to commit to attack the run or pass on any given play. It's like he's afraid to run blitz because it may not be a run. He's afraid to pass blitz because they may run the ball. His zone scheme does not seem to call for defenders manning up on offensive players in their zone. I just can't get a read on what it is he is trying to do. It looks like he is trying to defend against everything all the time. It doesn't really come off that much different than the RAC 3-4. |

First answer is best answer.
Rushing 3 men in today's offense is akin to suicide. It's dumb as all hell.

Doesn't disguise blitzes or coverages
Linebackers are coached to wait instead of attack Too much off coverage (although it seems like they are pressing a ton this year which they shouldn't do with corners like Steven Nelson), over-reliant on Cover 1 Man when we should be mixing it up constantly given our lack of talent on the back end. Bob's scheme is easy to decipher pre-snap which is why even when we had top end talent in 2014 and 2015 Manning assraped us constantly. We had a really, really good defense when we had Dontari Poe, Jaye Howard, Derrick Johnson, Allen Bailey, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Eric Berry, Marcus Peters and Sean Smith all in their prime or close to it in 2014 and 2015. That glut of talent allowed guys like Ron Parker and Husain Abdullah to succeed in complementary roles. Now dudes like that are our best players and Bob can't get away with being an uncreative pussy. The defense definitely lacks talent but it doesn't lack so much talent that it should be this bad. They have pass rushers and decent cornerbacks, Bob should be doing everything in his power to hide the problems at ILB and S from getting exposed but he doesn't do that. |

The players don't tackle worth a damn and they don't cover in the secondary worth a damn. Not sure how the scheme can fix it. They need better players.

Give us the entire Jacksonville defensive squad and our coaches still wouldn't know what to do with it. It would instantly drop to an average defense.

No it wouldn’t. Sutton’s defense was top 10 in points allowed every year before 2017 when our talent level sunk.
