David Tepper purchases Carolina Panthers

https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-ne...ina-franchise/

Minority Steelers owner David Tepper purchases the Carolina Panthers

David Tepper, the founder of Appaloosa Management, has reached a deal to become the owner of the Carolina Panthers, according to Tyler Feldman of WBNG.com.

Tepper is currently a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, so for this deal to go through, Tepper will have to sell his stake in the Steelers. Tepper is worth a reported $11 billion and he bought the Panthers for somewhere in between $2.1 and 2.5 billion.

Per Kevin Patra of NFL.com, the proposal to buy will be presented to the finance committee at the league’s spring owners meeting which takes place May 21-23. If the finance committee accepts the proposal, it is expected that the owners will vote to approve as well. For Tepper to be able to take over, at least three-fourths of the NFL’s owners must vote to approve him.

One of the biggest concerns for Panthers fans were if Tepper would want to move the Panthers to a different city. There has been a lot o talk about the Panthers getting a new stadium, and if he would move the team if he didn’t get one.

According to Ian Rapport of NFL Network, Tepper would like to see the Panthers stay in Charlotte.

The Panthers have been for sale since December when Owner Jerry Richardson was accused of sexual misconduct and agreed to put up the team for sale. One of the reasons that Richardson narrowed in on Tepper was because of his interest in keeping the team in Charlotte.

The approval should also move fairly quickly, another reason that Richardson wanted Tepper.

I would think every owner would sprint to whatever yes button they could find at that valuation.

I think it's valued high in part because of Thomas Davis' strong relationships with steroid providers.

Can't imagine Panthers fans love this. Diehard Steelers fan (hello Jimmy Haslem), no local ties to Charlotte, no connection to football other than a business interest, all in time to fleece the city on a shitty stadium deal. The city would have been better off with a guy like Ben Navarro who at least grew up in the Carolinas in a football family. I still think the NFL needs to embrace celebrities and ex-athletes as minority owners, the way the NBA has embraced guys like Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z, and the MLB has embraced Jeter, Magic, and Nolan Ryan (the Dolphins are the only NFL team that even remotely does this). It's hard to find anything exciting about this. The NFL needs owners who connect with the fans and I can't imagine this accomplishes that in any way whatsoever.

Even though Navarro was a far better fit and bid more $, Tepper was picked because he's already in the NFL owner's inner circle. Says a lot about why NFL owners suck.

They negotiated a clause that he has to pay $200-300m extra if he moves the team. Richardson may have been shoved out, but at least he kept Charlotte in his best interests.

Absurd overpay, I would say the NFL is looking at maybe another 20-30 years at best until the league is looking at certain death. Entertainment options are far superior to the NFL and the trend is only going to continue. Millennials are not interested in or watching live sports, the baby boomers (1/3 of US pop) will die out, the advertising money is drying up along with the TV deals (ESPN/CNNSI already dying/dead). Kids are being held out of football and losing interest across the board in sports. Parents both have to work to support a family in the US and are sadly taking the lazier option. They are left with the choice of shelling out money and running their kids everywhere or simply tossing them the ipad/xbox/netflix remote for basically nothing and eliminating all that hassle. The NFL is already losing massive ratings and that is only going to continue. Oddly a few ass pats might end up being the best thing Richardson ever did from a business perspective as he got out with a huge win on his investment.

I've said before, the NFL needs the XFL or Ebersol's league more than ever. The owners are too safe and out of touch to try anything different. Sadly, it will take a competitor league with owners willing to put everything on the line to find a few ideas that work. The NFL will copy some of their best ideas. The NFL owners will eventually run the league into the ground. Every rule change puts money above making the game better. No innovation whatsoever. That's what happens when you have NFL owners who can make a shitload of money even if they suck at their job.

You can cherry pick stats and ratings. My post is generally a 30 thousand foot view of the NFL's future over the next few decades. I consult with a lot of local government agencies and in Colorado all youth sports go through the Rec Centers so I hear constantly about rapidly declining participation and how to save it. In the last decade most programs have half of what they used to across the board and no one can find coaches as HS students don't work anymore and the corporate culture has quickly pounced on predatory and intelligent free labor otherwise known as college internships. 5-10 years ago only engineers and select majors from top universities were doing internships their last couple summers, now communication majors "have" to start after their freshman year.

You also have to be able to step outside your generation and understand that while you and I may have grown up with 12 channels and nintendo. Current crop has unbelievable instant choice for entertainment via Netflix/xbox/ipad/internet with zero commercials nor scheduling around live events/times.

World series drew some of the beSt numbers in like over 12 years, nba viewership keeps going up every year, nfl took a slight dip but I think it will be fine, I'm only 24 so maybe I just don't know shit

No sweat I'm not dug in on any of this and I may be proven completely wrong, but I do typically excel at this sort of pattern recognition and ability to project based on a few key indicators thrown together. Thanks for tossing out the age and "might not know shit". I'm curious since we're roughly 20 years apart, I mean other than growing up in a football house, aren't your friends more likely to be gaming/netflixing over sitting there on Sundays watching commercial after commercial with some football mixed in? Sometimes I find myself thinking "this is a waste of my time" especially with Smith under center, if Mahomes flames out I am not sure I will stick with the NFL much longer as my pleasure/pain ratio as a Chiefs fan has not been kind over the decades.

Older, but may not know shit either

You are correct. I know children's nonprofits are struggling with this issue too. Kids have a lot more distractions and video games is a huge one. It's impacting most sports, but football has to be the most concerning. The NBA has embraced younger entertainment. Most owners are courting entertainment gurus like Jay-Z and Nelly to make the game more relevant. Jay-Z for example completely changed the music, liquor selection, and VIP experience for the Nets and it was very well received. MLB has done a fantastic job embracing new media which is key for young multitaskers. Their streaming is crushing it, and the MLB Network is doing fantastic. The NFL has done none of those things, and worse, they've made the game less accessible to young fans because games are too expensive and many families don't want to spring for a dish. That coupled with the concussion issue, and I think the NFL could be in some real trouble. They need new ideas. Unfortunately, every idea they come up with puts $ above fan experience and access. And their TV deal and streaming options are downright awful.
