HBO set to do American Gods

This could be all kinds of awesome. Not quite as exciting as the original Game of Thrones announcement in '09, but not that far behind. I'm a big fan of Gaiman's work.

Playtone Setting Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' For HBO Series

By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday April 14, 2011 @ 7:20pm EDT

EXCLUSIVE: As HBO prepares to unveil its epic-sized series adaptation of George RR Martin's Game of Thrones this Sunday, the payweb has begun talks to acquire the Neil Gaiman novel American Gods to be developed into another fantasy series. The project was brought to HBO by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and it was brought to them by Robert Richardson. The plan is for Richardson and Gaiman to write the pilot together.

...American Gods, the 2002 book that won both the Stoker and Hugo Award among other prizes, lays out a battle between two sets of gods. One consists of the traditional gods and mythological creatures who got their power because people throughout history believed in them. They are losing steam as people's beliefs wane and are in danger of being supplanted by a new set of gods who reflect America's preoccupation with technological advancements and obsessions with media, celebrity, technology and drugs. The protagonist is an ex-con who becomes the traveling partner of a conman who turns out to be one of the older gods trying to recruit troops to battle the upstart deities.
Little bit more at the link.

Playtone, as folks probably know, are the guys responsible for Band Of Brothers/The Pacific, John Adams, From the Earth to the Moon and Big Love.

American Gods was great. I can see this being more of a layup for HBO than AGoT.

Honestly, I stopped reading American Gods after about 200 pages. It just couldn't hold me. Maybe it was the timing... I don't know. But I want to like it. And I plan on revisiting the novel someday in the near future.

Having said that, the idea of an HBO series is pretty exciting. I'd LOVE to see this happen.

Few days old news (well, HBO dropping it is even older than that) but starz has picked it up, tabbing Bryan Fuller as showrunner.

This might be enough to get me to try starz.

The book was shit. I forced myself to finish it just because it had great reviews and I thought there would be some great ending to make it all worth it. **** that book. One of the biggest pieces of shit I have ever read.

Yeah, there isn't anything appealing to me on there right now, but I'm a big fan of Gaiman in general, and of American Gods in particular. I think it's a great novel.

I wrapped up this book about a week ago. Meh... MEEEHHHHH.

I wanted to love it given the reviews and my affinity for mythology. It was just not entertaining. Shadow was ****ing boring. What was the point of Laura being brought back to life? She's like hanging out and trying to work overnight at 7/11s and shit lol so bad. And the point of the plot in the small town?

My only enjoyment from this book came from the Coming to America interludes and trying to guess which gods were being described.

How dare you.

Shadow is boring because he's a reader avatar.

As for the series, I liked it a lot even though it's definitely a little "out there" for a lot of people.

I was spoiled by seeing who McShane was cast before reading the book.. but go ahead and tell me three actors who can pull it off better than he can.

Orlando Jones... Gillian Anderson (though she's not coming back)... Crispin Glover... Pablo ****ing Schreiber. Producers did a great job netting a great ensemble.

McShane was fate. That guy was born to play Mr. Wednesday.

And you can't forget ****ing Cloris Leachman and Peter Stormare.
