RIP EJ Holub

Sad to see this late last night. If you don't know about EJ Holub, he was called "Holler Guy" on the 1960s era Chiefs. Started at linebacker in Super Bowl I, moved to center and started there in Super Bowl IV. Had multiple knee operations on both knees. Super tough, all heart, great player. Should be in the Pro Football HOF. God Speed EJ.

https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...-holub-dies-81

E.J. Holub, a college football Hall of Famer who excelled on both sides of the ball at Texas Tech, has died at age 81.

"There are few players throughout history with the talent of an E.J. Holub," Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement. "He was the first College Football Hall of Famer in our history and will forever be remembered for his ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball. Most importantly, he was a dedicated Red Raider throughout his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time."

Holub played linebacker and center for the Red Raiders. He was a consensus All-American in 1960 on a team with future NFL Hall of Famers Mike Ditka and Bob Lilly.

A Lubbock High School graduate, Holub was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 1977, the college football Hall in 1986 and the Tech Ring of Honor in 2012.

Holub was a first-round draft pick of the Dallas Texans in the AFL and was a five-time All-Star in the league at linebacker. Multiple knee injuries forced him to move to center later in his career. He started Super Bowl I at linebacker and Super Bowl IV at center -- helping lead the Chiefs to a 23-7 win over the Vikings.

He was before my time, so I can only go by old clips, etc...but I can appreciate what kind of warrior he was. He was one of my Dad's favorites.

I hope he watched Sunday's game and smiled. RIP, to a true warrior!

So many "name" players on those old Chiefs defenses, Holub being one of the studs.

I think he had surgery eleven total times on both knees. This was before knee surgery was non-invasive. I remember he once said his knees looked like he'd been in a knife fight was a gang of midgets. If you don't know about EJ, check out his Wiki page. He was a great character in the NFL and is in the Chiefs ring of honor.

Thanks GB for never forgetting the old time greats of the Texans/Chiefs that put us in Super Bowls 1 and 4.

I don't remember him much but reading about him made me respect his toughness, like most old timers in the NFL. No snowflakes back then!

I met him at a Chiefs draft party @ the Pavillion, along with Conrad Dobler and Bobby Bell.

He looked like one bad ass man. Crushed my hand. I'll never forget it.

Chiefs roots are rock solid.

Sad news indeed. He was my favorite Chief by a mile when he was playing. He was one tuff SOB with a never-quit motor.

For the longest stretch of time, our season tickets were under his ring of honor name (thus the moniker.) Met him a couple of times at games when there were always old players in the open air boxes. He was funny. Going to games felt like a club then, at least to a 6 or 7 year old.

RIP Mr Holub you were the blood and guts of that offensive line I will never forget you. He handed it off to Jack Rudney in 1970 who inherited you mean nasty playing style you trained him well.
