Mock (3/26)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs sign CB Kenneth Acker to a minimal deal.

2. The Chiefs sign DT Jay Bromley (Giants) for 2 years, $6m.

3. The Chiefs do not sign WR Kendall Wright (Titans).

The draft:

2.54. OLB Josh Sweat, Florida State

Until I'm convinced otherwise, I believe that Veach will be a continuation of what John Dorsey did in the NFL Draft. If so, Sweat is the picture-perfect idea of what Dorsey would draft at the position. Sweat was the most impressive specimen at the position at the Combine, with perfect size, great arm length, and phenomenal athleticism. I think Sweat has some juice to be a first round pick, even.

3.78 (Smith). S Justin Reid, Stanford

The Chiefs love corner-safety flexibility, and Justin Reid was a corner at Stanford, making him a good fit to be a potential starter alongside Eric Berry. He's got some coverage issues to clean up and it'll take him an offseason or two to get that classic safety body, but he's the kind of guy you can put in any scheme and move him around anywhere.

3.86. DE RJ McIntosh, Miami

McIntosh has been fingered recently on a podcast I listen to as being a good fit for the Chiefs, specifically if they go into an attack-heavy personnel scheme.

4.122. OG Wyatt Teller, Virginia Tech

4.124 (Peters). CB Arrion Springs, Oregon

6.196 (Foles). QB Mike White, Western Kentucky

7.233 (King). DE Mike Ramsay, Duke

7.243 (Cooper). ILB Trent Tanking, Kansas State

roster:

QB: Mahomes, Henne, White
RB: Hunt, Ware, West, Williams
FB: Sherman

WR: Hill, Watkins, Conley, Thomas, Robinson, Chesson
TE: Kelce, Watson, Harris

LT: Fisher, Schwartz
LG: Ehinger, Teller
C: Morse, Erving, Devey
RG: Duvarney-Tardif, Erving
RT: Schwartz, Witzmann

DE: Jones, Jenkins, Ramsay
NT: Williams, Nunez-Roches
DE: Bailey, Bromley, McIntosh

OLB: Ford, Kpassagnon
ILB: Ragland, Smith
ILB: Hitchens, Eligwe, Tanking
OLB: Houston, Sweat

CB: Fuller, Amerson, Nelson, Springs, Acker
S: Berry, Reid, Sorensen, Murray, McQuay

K: Butker
P: Colquitt
LS: Winchester

Justin Reid is not lasting until the 3rd round. I'd love it if he did....but it's not happening.

I like RJ McIntosh, but I think he's seen as quite a developmental guy, not sure if I would risk a 3rd on him as a result but I'd take him in the 4th and onwards. I know these are not gospel, but here's the snippet from the nfl draft tracker:

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 3-4

SOURCES TELL US "Should have stayed in. He needs to keep growing into his frame and get a lot stronger. You don't want to come out until you know you're ready to do battle against grown men and I don't think he's there yet." -- AFC Director of Scouting

Veach isn't spending a 2nd round pick on a OLBer that won't likely see the field because of Houston, Ford and Kpassognon.

The first player he chooses will be an every down player like a CB or Safety and maybe even a LG or D lineman.

There isn't room for a OLBer starter, making it a waste of a pick, especially after they took Tanoh last year.

I don’t disagree but Ford has been hurt a lot and Houston will be a year older. That said, I only see them doing it if a guy like Hubbard or Landry fall. Otherwise I like CB, S, DL or OL first.

Josh Sweat, a guy I can't get behind until maybe the 4th round. Runs like a cheetah in shorts, but plays like an elephant in pads. The guy plays slow and has a slow release off the line. That's one place the scouting reports are absolutely on point. He doesn't seem to go hard and give that great second effort either. You can't teach either of those things very well. He just isn't the type of player I want to watch. Maybe you take a flier later that he can turn it around, but I think the knee injuries have him delaying, looking for a chop block first before he's willing to give it a go. I dunno, something isn't right. That kid has first-rate athleticism and should look like he got shot out of a cannon off the snap. You should see outstanding closing speed to the ball in space. He just doesn't show either to me.

NFL.com has Reid as a 1st-2nd round pick and nfldraftscout has him as their 59th rated player overall.
On tape, he seems to be a top 45 pick. I don't see how he last until 78.

I don't mind Teller.

I really like Arrion Springs and he proved his doubters wrong running a 4.47 at his pro day. The only thing that sucks about him is his hands, he can't catch a cold. The good thing is, he can cover anyone and he gets his hands on a boatload of balls. He'd be a great pickup that late, and with his size and tackling ability wouldn't be a bad FS convert consideration either.

There is no way in hell that Mike White makes it past the 4th round IMO. Hell, I'd bet he goes before the 4th. He's the last NFL sized QB that can put zip on the ball, throw accurately, and read a defense in one package. He's easily the 7th best QB in this draft and there's a huge drop-off after him.

I'm liking Ramsay more than the Cothren kid from PSU you had in some previous mocks. He's not real long, but he's got some burst and he's a decent player. He saw alot of double-teams, but he also showed he really struggles to split them. Also, he seems to struggle to disengage overall. Needs some work in that area. Also going to say I worry about his gap discipline in the pros with that disengagement issue, as he generally takes wide arcs to pressure the QB.

Tanking... bah... pick him up as an UDFA maybe. 1 season of production and size issues. Dont know how he ran at the K-State pro day. Wow me and maybe I'll say take a flier.

I don't like Sweat as a prospect at all, much less Round 2. If you're lucky, Reid makes it to the Chiefs 2nd round selection.

I like McIntosh, but he's more Round 2 range I think.

I watched some of him and just went “meh.”

No thanks unless it’s round 4. Big injury concerns and just didn’t pop out on film. Shit I liked Jeff Holland more than him. Lorenzo Carter as well.
