Chiefs Salary Cap 2024 - Moves to be made

Clearly, MVS should and will be cut June 1st which frees up about $11M. There are ways to restructure Mahomes, Thuney and Kelce potentially. The question here is, can the Chiefs find enough room to sign Sneed, Jones, Tranquill and Gay and still sign a top tier WR? I believe the 24 cap is going to increase a well.

Cap gurus, what other move can be made here?

So if Mahomes is in a middle of a contract and asking for a contract that would limit building the team, why wouldn't Veach just say no or negotiate a deal that doesn't limit him in the future?

Or maybe...just maybe the restructure Mahomes signed doesn't limit him and Veach still has options when it comes to moving money around and signing players and Mahomes and his agent worked to make sure the restructure still allows flexibility for the team.... I know crazy idea, but maybe...

That's not what anyone is saying.

He's being paid like he's the best player in the NFL, and he should be.

That doesn't change the fact that it makes things difficult capwise

Yes I agree. And Veach still has flexibility when it comes to his contract right? Or do you think he's locked into these 60+ mil cap hits the next 3 years?

No, you could flex a bunch of it out.

And then have an $80m cap hit next year, and the year after, and the year after.

If you want to maximize ONE year, sure, you can do it. Probably even work.

But then you're going to sacrifice multiple years of gutting the team around him, and these are ALL prime years.

Do you want ONE more Super Bowl in his prime, or do you want a legit shot at EACH and ALL of them?

An example of why moving a large amount of salary (or even just significant amounts) into the future is not a great thing to do a lot of the time.

Take Joe Thuney-great player, right? We backloaded and extended his deal, had him cheap for a couple of years there-but now we have to pay those credit card bills.

Next year, he's $26m. For a Guard. A very, very good Guard, but an offensive guard making as much as TWO Deandre Hopkins, for example.

The bills come due, and you have to pay them.

You can put it on the card, but it's going to cost you later.

How would they sacrifice multiple years? They can restructure as much as they feel they need and roll any money left over on this current contract to his new contract.

But again, just to be clear, you think Mahomes forced Veach into a deal that even 1 restructure costs them multiple opportunities at a Superbowl? That's the narrative you're going for? And Veach accepted that....because?

Yeah, but if we wanted to re-sign Thuney to a new contract and lower his cap hits, we could. Which is what we're going to do with Mahomes. Unless you think Mahomes is nearing the end of his prime like Thuney is.

We really went from talking about how team friendly Mahomes contract is and how his agent and Veach made is so flexible....to now, it's not flexible at all and one restructure is going to cost us multiple opportunities at Superbowls. Lol!

No, dude. No.

I'm not going for any 'narrative'.

The facts are that Mahomes' agents called Veach and wanted a new deal, and Veach did it.

period. Those are facts, not a narrrative.

If you want to make up stuff, feel free.

If you are moving Mahomes' money into the future, it's presumably to sign free agents, right? So you'll have to pay them, too.

There's no free lunch, man.

People have this attitude that the cap is a myth, and that's bullshit. You can fudge it for a year, maybe even two-but you're going to pay eventually.

It's very much like a credit card. You're going to be paying top tier money for depreciated assets before you can get out from under it if you're not careful. Meanwhile, you'll have to let your good young players go, because you won't be able to afford to sign them to fair second contracts because you're overpaying guys that are in decline.

King has obviously never watched the NFL before. This isn't Madden where you can turn the salary cap off

It's always been really hard to win when you pay your QB top 5 money. Only Mahomes (last year) did it in the modern era and it was greatly helped by the draft trading Tyreek and having other extra picks.

He's paid elite money now. Even if we restructured Mahomes contract by $20 million to give him a cap hit like this year at $37 million he would still be a top
10 paid QB and far more than 11% of our cap.

Rookie contract Mahomes is gone. Those days are over

You really just have no grasp of anything that's not all or nothing, black/white, do you?

They've hit the Mahomes piggybank several times, just not in the large amounts that guys on internet forums want them to.

They're not going to do anything to drastically affect his cap hits. It might be a little here and there, but it's not going to be like $20m or something.

'Flexible' is the word. That's not the same thing as 'blank check' that you can just finagle into whatever you want it to be.

but you still gotta pay eventually.

Right now, 2028 is a low cap hit. I expect that's so that between now and then, you could move a little forward here and there.

But it's not going to be this massive free for all in free agency like you guys think.

Cool. Then Veach shouldn't have offered a deal that limits him and his ability to build a team around Mahomes like that.

What could Mahomes have done? Held out? Became a cancer?

Veach's job is to build the whole team, not just give Mahomes a blank check.

And I also don't believe Mahomes and his agent would ask for a deal that would limit Veach and his ability to put players around him. That's just stupid.

Ok. Then when the QB asks for a raise in the middle of a contract that limits your ability to build around him like you guys say, say no.

You're getting paid millions of dollars to make tough decisions and build a complete team.

But then again, it's good to know that you guys think Veach and Mahomes have an adversarial relationship with each other. That's cool.

Who said it had to be massive? It can be as small or as large as they need it. If Aiyuk is available, then they might need to move around a lot. And they absolute should. If they want a guy like Mooney and then go draft a WR early, then they don't need as much.

The point being, the flexibility offered in the original contract is still there. It's up to Veach to use it as needed and Mahomes didn't restructure in the middle of his contract just to make things more difficult to build around him.

Idk what they can do without pushing money to the future but Jawaan Taylor cannot have a $24 million cap hit next year
