A Patrick Mahomes II poll - The long and the short of it.

I think we can all agree that Patrick Mahomes II is the greatest quarterback ever. But something that boggles my mind is that I think a lot of his best plays are short throws or runs.

Don't get me wrong. A lot of his best plays are also medium and long throws. I'm pretty sure he's also had some great kickoff returns and field goals, and who can forget his Miracle on Ice in 1980 and winning four gold medals in Berlin in 1936?

But my point is that some of his most jaw-dropping plays, in my opinion, are passes where the ball doesn't actually travel very far or doesn't get thrown at all. I think in part the reason is that I've seen other great quarterbacks make fantastic long throws on occasion, not with the frequency or clutchness that Patrick Mahomes II does, but it happens occasionally.

But the twirling touchdown to Clyde against the Bucs? The flip to McKinnon against the broncos? The short shuttle to Kelce against the Texans in the playoffs when four defenders were in the space? The two-pointer against the broncos where he moved around in the pocket for nearly an entire quarter of game clock before hitting it? I've never seen that by other quarterbacks, not even occasionally.

So my question to you, dear reader, regards the prevalence of short passes or runs in the all-time Top Ten Mahomes plays. Let's define a short pass as one that was completed less than ten yards downfield, not considering total air yards.

How many of the top ten plays (so far) have been short passes or runs?

Rules note: If you cannot narrow down a top ten plays, you can use the top 100 or 1000 plays and scale it down.

Side note: At some point we're going to have a tournament to identify the top Mahomes play of all time (so far). Maybe after his tenth year or so. Or maybe we'll do it every five years, which would make it due .... hmmm, now.

No way could I answer this without going through all of his highlights. He has so so many jaw dropping plays that it's damn near impossible to pick 10 of the best ones

Not sure how many, but I'm willing to bet there are more runs in his top-10 plays than most people would realize.

Obviously, there's the run vs. TEN in the fist half of the AFCCG 2019. I might throw in the TD rush he turned in vs. TEN last season as well.

There's the TD rush he had vs. CLE about mid-way through the 2nd quarter when KC was down 15-3.

The rush in SBLVII that basically sealed the W.

And i know there's a few more that probably could make the list.

The single best play in his career will be him answering the phone to take the call from Clark Hunt, Brett Veach and Andy Reid on Draft Day.

Not sure what we're considering short passes here.

So maybe half of these are short passes or runs.

He’s got a dozen or so long plays that are amazing

He’s got a dozen or so mid range plays that are amazing

He’s got a dozen or so short passes that are amazing

He’s got almost a dozen runs that are amazing

Put that against any KC qb. No contest.

Put that against any QB, arguably top three, five or best ever.

Some of those “short passes” are him making big time plays, not even close to the short passers of so many really good QBs

How is this even an off-season talk to have.

Remember dink and dunk QBs of our past? Tell me cassel, smith, Brodie, thigpen, gerbac or Gannon had anything close to the short passes we are talking about with PMII? Let alone the scrambling or many many long passes!!!!!!

Nothing compares to what we’re witnessing. It’s just amazing.

2. Downfield flick to McKinnon against the broncos
3. The Texan two-yarder to Kelce in the playoffs.
4. 4th down 48 yarder to Hill against the Ravens.
5. Jet Chip Wasp.
6. Kissing the pylon run against the Seahawks.
7. The Hill long touchdown against the Bills in the 13-second game.
8. The Colts scramble-right TD pass that made Collinsworth mad.
9. The 49ers scramble touchdown pass in 2018 that put the league on notice.
10. The Titans AFC Championship game run.

I'm showing 50 percent of the highlights being short passes or runs.

I retain full right to adjust this list, by the way. This is just me thinking about Patrick Mahomes II for 30 seconds.
Touchdown pass to Hardman Saints game back of the end zone. That was one hell of a pass and catch for a touchdown.

I don't actually think its possible to narrow down to his best or even top 10 plays, just too many to chose from and there are so many variations in the plays.

A bomb, a crazy side arm under a defenders arm, a flip over his head, a no look, a left hander, and a bunch of runs where he looks like he is just barely out running every person chasing him.

Its like trying to pin point the very best tits you have ever seen. There are just so many that made you go holy shit.

Ones not mentioned off the top of my head:

-The first No-look to Drob vs the Ravens.
-The deep ball to Fortson in 2023... can't remember against who, but Mahomes put it in the perfect spot on a perfectly defended play.

Sometimes short passes turn into long bombs in the stats when you have a guy named Kelce catching them. I went 6 just because of that.
