Chiefs! Do It Sunday! For Yourselves And All Those Who Before You

All right lads!! It’s 2020 and we reach that goal today.

I've found myself reminiscing a lot over the past few weeks. And wanted to share a thought or two.

Do it for Lamar.

Lord knows he tried to get this franchise straightened out after letting so many unqualified clowns run this franchise after the glory years.

For Joe Delaney.

Guy gave his life for others and because of that we only got a glimpse of what a great player he was going to be. RIP Joe.

For Derrick.

Not much I can add. But we should have brought home at least one while he was alive. RIP DT.

For Lloyd Wells.

If not for him, franchise success in getting AND KEEPING players from historically black colleges would not have been possible. Became the first black full time scout in the AFL and he was directly responsible for getting players like Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, Otis Taylor, Jim Kearney and Emmitt Thomas into our draft and on our roster. That's an incredible amount of HOF talent.

This week on the Chiefs website there is a very short -too short - post SB IV interview with Lloyd Wells. Frank Gifford is interviewing a very young Mike Garrett and he stops to bring in Lloyd Wells. Without him, we don't have the same rich franchise history.

RIP Lloyd "Judge" Wells.

For Yan.

The Norwegian who is still haunted by those Christmas Day misses. For Wilbur Young, a great player who got to wear Ernie Ladd's number 99 and became my favorite on those losing mid 70's squads.

For Paul Wiggin.

Smart guy. Stanford educated and a good football man. He tried, but was saddled with real mismanagement at the top, resulting in three years of ineptitude and a 11-24 record.

For my favorite TE of the 70's Walter White.

Gave the Chiefs a real threat at the position and was top 5 in receiving yards in 1977. And I remember him having a tremendous game against a very good Raiders team in 1977.

For Gary Spani.

Has there ever been a player so damn good, who played for some of the biggest losers in all of football? Spani was raised in Manhattan, played at KSU, was a three time All Big 8 first team player. And remember, this was the Big 8 in all its glory. Being named first team Big 8 then was no easy task. Spani was the first consensus AA at KSU in 1977. Was named Big 8 defensive POY in 77.
KSU record in his career? 5-28. Yet that guy came to play every game.

Drafted by the Chiefs, he was a starter and held the career record for tackles until 2002. He at least tasted some success under Marv Levy. And a playoff game under John Mackovic.

For Art Still. Drafted 2nd overall in 78. Guy was incredible. 14.5 sacks in 1980. Was ferocious off the edge. We had such a great group of defensive players in that era. Gary Green, Gary Barbaro, Mike Bell (him and his twin bro got into coke), Still, Whitney Paul... they were a good unit. And it always seemed we were this close (thumb and index finger width) to being really good. But the very earliest "because Chiefs" seemed to happen.

For Albert Lewis. Deron Cherry. Lloyd Burress. Bill Maas. Dino. For Safety Mark Collins. I'll never forget seeing him broken-hearted after the 10-7 loss. And all the forgotten ones. Trent, Tony, Priest. Even the villains who tore our hearts out.

All week I've been thinking about those folks who aren't here to celebrate this entire week with us. Oh how my Mom would have enjoyed this week. My Dad too. Mom got to see both early SB's. My Dad sadly, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in spring of 1969 and succumbed to the issue in September of that year. So he missed SB IV.

My son and daughter, living far away but I know my son is feeling pretty good about life right now. My daughter, also far away, but happy and healthy in life

One of my many, funny, incredible brothers is also not here to be a part of this week. But on Sunday, we will carry their spirit with us, win or lose. But we ain't about to lose this one.

In the Gold section on Sunday, we'll raise a glass to victory.

William

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
