Bob Sutton "felt like we had to do something"

https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2018/...REJhwTtVedVoaA

I will admit—when I learned Kansas City Chiefs decided to suddenly “play some young guys” on Sunday night in their 38-31 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with an ability to clinch (no exaggeration) three weeks off on the line, it did not make a ton of sense to me.

Kendall Fuller could not play after he was ruled on the wrong side of a game-time decision, and the Chiefs benched Ron Parker and Orlando Scandrick in favor of Daniel Sorensen and two 22-year-olds, Charvarius Ward and Tremon Smith.

The timing couldn’t have been more odd. It was unprecedented, but the Chiefs were seeing what we all saw: something had to change.

“I think we just felt like we had to do something to get some juice going,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, the head man in charge of the league’s No. 31 defense, according to yards allowed per game, said Thursday. “We only had so many places we could have changed, and [Ward] was one of them. I think Charvarius has got great speed. He brings speed to the defense, and that’s helpful. He’s a young, young guy, and that’s a big task to ask of him, but that’s why I thought he did a good job from the competitive nature.”

It’s fair to presume the Chiefs wanted Fuller and Nelson to start with Ward as their third option in nickel looks. When Fuller couldn’t go, that plan changed.

“You ended up with two young guys,” Sutton said. “But that’s the NFL, too. You just got to roll, you know? Sometimes you don’t have all your guys.”

Based upon Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s Monday conference call, Wednesday presser and Sutton’s thoughts on Thursday, the Chiefs were pleased with their decision, one Sutton admitted Thursday had been in the works for a few weeks.

“First, the physical ability has to be there,” defensive backs coach Al Harris said Thursday. “Then they can pick up the things mentally. For young players, more than likely, the mental aspect is the bigger picture to where you can go out there and he is not blowing coverages or anything like that.”

The Chiefs felt Ward showed that trait.

Although he wasn’t perfect—he took two defensive pass interference penalties and was beaten by a veteran receiver in Doug Baldwin in a critical play toward the end of the game—he offered enough, according to Sutton, to make the Chiefs feel good about their decision.

“He had a couple tough plays at the end,” Sutton said. “Those were tough plays. They were great throws. He was about as close as you could get to a man, but you got to make the plays, too. I thought, overall, he did a pretty good job for a first time out there. Russel’s a really good quarterback, very accurate, so I thought overall, he did a pretty good job out there.”

Asked if Ward would play moving forward on Wednesday, Reid answered in the affirmative.

“Yeah, potentially,” Reid said.
“We’ll just see how that goes, but yeah, I’d tell you that he did some nice things there. Some things he can learn from too. He was in position to make some plays and now you’ve got to go up and get the ball out there.”

The signs are that Ward will get another crack when the Chiefs have their third chance to win the AFC West Sunday at home against Oakland. The coaches certainly feel he will make the most of it.

It is not ideal, but everybody can agree something had to be done.

We should not forget Al Harris when we talk about this position group.
So it appears we will be rolling with the rookies at least one more week.
Glad to see that Sutton will bench players for rookies. It just seems like a horrible time to be doing that especially with the horrible play of the rookies.
Is this what Allen Bailey was really talking about in his interview where he said that about the back end?

Sorry to let him know this league is going somewhere where you need to be on the cusp of creating something new on defense, not going with something old.
I have been absent since the Chargers game, because I just couldn't do anything but wish bad things on Sutton.

And then I felt like Sutton intentionally made decisions that he knew would more than likely result in a loss unless the offense scored 40+ points. It was almost like he was tired of hearing about his reluctance to play young & inexperienced players.

His scheme is bullshit, his personnel groupings often make no sense, and he seemingly has no clue when to bring pressure or blitz. Unless we win the Super Bowl, he absolutely has to be fired.

If we get beat in the playoffs because we couldn't stop anyone from scoring, and he isn't fired, it will suck all my enjoyment out of having Mahomes at QB.

I mean of course I love Mahomes, and I waited 42 years as a Chiefs fan for my team to draft and develop a legitimate QB, but to me those 42 years of frustration means that I have absolutely no FN patience or tolerance for the Chiefs organization to screw over and waste the long awaited QB savior of my team.

So, my hate for Sutton is well known, but I am now of the opinion that Emmitt Thomas has to go as well. I can no longer deal with defensive backs who are unable to play without grabbing and holding on nearly every single play, especially in the red zone. He may be a legend, but the defensive backs, outside of Peters, have been very bad for quite a long time. Whatever techniques he is teaching and coaching has led to a secondary that consistently gives teams free play after free play in the red zone because it seems like the technique they employ is holding, grabbing, and interfering with the receiver and hoping the refs miss it or just get tired of throwing their flags

Sorry for the rant. I am sure most people saw how long this post is and just skipped it, and I don't blame them.

The throws from Wilson on the last drive were indefensible. The Chiefs secondary actually played those throws quite well but they were completed and iced the game because................

....Chiefs.

This reads as though Sutton is acknowledging that the defense is a dumpster fire, but he’s also acknowledging that he has no idea how to fix it so he attempted a substitution without really knowing what the issue is. Not a reassuring thing to read.

Until fairly recently, most of the high ranks had no idea that their pillars were actually sand chambers designed to hold counterweight for an emergency system which was designed to evacuate the Ark to safety below the Temple in case of foreign invasion/occupation.

Yep, nothing like having an entire HALF of your team falling apart, and the guy who is paid to fix it when it breaks down has all of the coaching ability of Barney Rubble...

He is not reading the line and filling like a normal lineback, he is playing mentally slow, which makes him look physically slow. No one's coaching or scheme teaches this lack of reaction to what the LB is seeing in front of him...

I agree, two weeks in a row. Fuller had great coverage on the 4th and 8 vs. Rivers too... It was just a perfect throw.

Watch Ward's special teams play, particularly two games in a row. The punt return by Baltimore he was horse shit, then the kick off block in the back before our last drive against San Diego. They were pathetic. These would not instill confidence to have him play all the time.

Sutton would be just as good or better in San Diego with the talent on that defense... We our struggling at LB and injuries have killed the secondary. Where we are healthy and talented, the front 4, this defense is doing alright.

With all due respect I disagree. What would have happened on that play IF Ward would have looked back a fraction of second sooner because he read the WR's body language as to when the ball was about to approach ? He either knocks it away and more likely "picks it". That is an easy pick IMHO if he looks back a tad sooner by reading the WR's body language. As is many passes should be getting picked especially in the red zone IF the defender is reading the body language of the WR. Instead most of the time the defender is facing the receiver with hands up and the ball either goes right by their ear or just over their head. How many times have you seen that happen Can't pick it IF you can't see the ball. Heck, turn around and PICK IT ! You especially won't get burned in the red zone because there is no more room to go and the body language of the WR is never more truthful than when in the red zone. Now I realize this play was not in the red zone but you get my point. For all my disdain for Marcus Peters this is one thing he did very well when given the chance and most other DBs can do this as well if they would just practice reading the WRs body language.

If I am a personnel guy looking for good DBs I want to know if they played the outfield in baseball and played it well. Playing it well not only means getting a good angle on a line drive or making a fantastic catch in the gap on the run BUT I want to know if they can "play the wall". I see defending passes and making interceptions especially in the red zone like playing the wall in baseball. And quite frankly when you look at DB defending in the red zone it should be played a lot like a basketball player. Some of you are very old school like me that one sport translates to the next.

The only that Bob even has a **** hair of a chance of coming back is if they somehow win it all. Even then, I doubt he'll keep his job.
