The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

The 49ers couldn't have leaked that shit.

All it accomplished, for as I know, is it smoked out a couple teams that aren't interested.

Anyone COULD have. Maybe the Niners got nervous seeing us take interest in Geno. Maybe they were trying to force the hand of a few teams. Maybe Jim Harbaugh is just an asshole and likes to stir the pot.

All I'm saying is that it could mean several things other than it's now written in stone that Alex Smith is being traded to us.

From this rumor emerging, we learned at least two teams who openly declared themselves NOT INTERESTED in Alex Smith.

Does that not take his pricetag down? Could this rumor had been started at Arrowhead in order to smoke out a couple teams who aren't interested?
Now, that is an astute observation.

We leak the rumor and it forces the hand of all the rest of the teams that were supposedly "in talks" with them about a trade.

It knocked out everyone, but us, the Cardinals (who are in the same division as SF) and the Jets.

SF was probably like We want a 2nd because we have a lot of teams interested and Reid/Dorsey were like "yeah, well see about that."

That's a vet front office that doesn't care about candy wrappers at work.

I'm fine with Alex Smith. Basically, trading for him is a win now move. Therefor, we better be in atleast the Divisional round of the playoffs next year.

An even better theory. Drop this rumor out, and pan for gold.

THAT would piss the Niners off something fierce. I like it!

Do you think Alex Smith is going to give this team an immediate 8 or 9 game improvement in one season?

If you do, you are saying he's better than any rookie, has experience and can win NOW.

Therefor, he better win now. None of this "evaluation year" BS.

I think Geno Smith can come in and Win now.
Just in the past two seasons we have watched how many rookies do it?

I think if they have any QB that turns the ball over < 10 times in a season this team is probably a 10-win team.

And Ozzie Newsome came in under Belichick with the Browns. The entire thing leads back to the same tree. Both guys credit Parcells and Belichick for teaching them how to do their jobs. I don't know if it's really bucking the trend, it's just being smart about it.
I can't believe I just read this entire gotdamned thread about bullshit rumor.

Just a couple of points to hit on.

That Exitor guy talks about how we'd only be paying Alex Smith about half of that 8.5 mil.

Not true.

Smith is due 1 million dollar roster bonus on Mar 1 or 2.

His base salary for the upciming season is 7.5.

So if the trade did happen, he'd be on the Chiefs books for that 7.5 mil, or roughly the same as Cassel's money.
