I’m actually quite encouraged we are not looking to overpay him.

I simply saw him blow off assignments, refuse to engage blockers or refuse to fill gaps because he was guessing WAY too often. That's not gambling, that's just being selfish. That's putting himself ahead of the team.

And ultimately I don't even blame him. I'm willing to let a young kid try to get his paper. But I'm not willing to also assume that if he wanted to he COULD'VE been a more complete player. Or take as faith that by moving inside where he's going to get double teamed essentially every play, he's going to continue to scrap. Not when he showed a general unwillingness to do so on the edge.

He's going to a nastier, dirtier position and showed a streak of not being a huge fan of doing the dirty work (going all the way back to his college days).
Playing the 3tech DT in the 4-3 under should give him a lot more schemed opportunities to rush the passer not only straight up, but on a bunch of stunts that Daly loves to use. Daly will also be able to teach him better technique so he will be better against the run.

Also, I’d bank on the pattern continuing of him putting in tons of work on trying to become the best player he can be. Look at how much more effective he’s been each consecutive year in the nfl. If Daly gets his run defense to take similar improvement leaps as Chris has made with his pass rush, this is an extremely young DMVP quality player.

If Jones was a QB, he’s be a guy that just threw 40 TDs and 19ints in his third year.

D pay him and let the coaches try to limit the mistakes that come from lack of discipline.

It doesn't seem like he has a track record of discipline though and that is what has Nut worried. And DO NOT CONFUSE work ethic with discipline. There are PLENTY of people who show up every day to do a shitty job.

Veach and co better have this same rationale for Kendall Fuller bc there is not a damn bit of proof that that man deserves a top 10 corner contract.

This is a buy low opportunity for KC.
I would take Jones all day every day over Cox. Jones simply has more raw talent than Cox ever will.

Some see Jones as being lazy, gambling, and not taking on blockers - I think this is way off. I don't want Jones to be a block eater, I want him shedding those blocks and blowing into the backfield as he has on a regular basis.

This run support stuff is getting way overblown as well. How many times did Jones blow up the running play and force the RB to change directions? If we did not have slow as molasses linebackers last year- they could and should have cleaned those plays up for a loss. Instead, they were slow to react and hardly ever covered the running lanes- if they did- they missed tackles for huge gains. Our run support from the secondary and safeties was terrible as well.

Jones also put constant pressure on the QB allowing Ford and Houston (when he was feeling it) to get a lot of sacks because Jones had already blown up the play. How many tipped passes and times Jones made the QB come off his first read because Jones was in his face.

Jones was the best player on defense and deserves to be paid like it.

It could be a negotiating ploy from the Chiefs or legit concern.

Then I don't think you watched him that closely last season.

It was a huge problem for most of the season and was mentioned here quite a bit.

You can say that it was worth it for the impact plays he made, but there's no fair argument to make that he was routinely assignment sound last year. He just wasn't.

I've watched quite a bit of their A22 film during the season. I've seen him quit moving his feet on a lot of double teams, as noted by a lot of guys on film. I haven't seen him moved out of his gap 1v1 enough to say that he wasn't playing his assignment though. I'm sure there's film/critiques out there, just haven't looked hard enough. If you have some links, feel free to send them over. I'm genuinely curious to see it.

It'll be hard to hunt 'em up, to be honest.

I noticed it around week 5 or 6 when I was trying to figure out why our run defense was just so god-awful. They had more talent than that. So I started watching individual guys along the line on a play to play basis. That's when I realized that Williams was a pretty lousy run-defender despite having the frame to do the job. It's also how I became such a Stan for Nnadi. You watch the play and you'll never notice him. You watch him, OTOH, and so many little things he does jump out at you. (This was also when I realized that Justin Houston was, to my surprise, a pretty shitty run defender as well all of the sudden)

So when you have those two on opposite sides of the spectrum and you watch what Jones is doing out there - he's WAAAAY closer to the Williams side than the Nnadi side. He was constantly looking to penetrate. Even on the run plays he made, that was how he did it. But the problem is that you could watch the linebackers behind him trying to read the running lanes and they just couldn't do it because he'd just LEEEROOOOOOY JEEENKINS!!! shit and blast forward. In the process he'd absolutely hang them out to dry.

I don't know that I ever saw a real breakdown of his run defense because he was kindof a sacred cow last year. He's damn likeable and he made big plays so people didn't criticize him much. But starting in October and through the rest of the season I know we had several conversations 'round these parts where we'd talk about it.

It's not a new thing and it's not smoke blowing by the Chiefs. He was constantly going out there and trying to 1-gap. At times it made for big plays but just as often it hung out the guys playing around him.

Without knowing the assignments given by the call of each play it would be hard to know for certain when he was or was not free lancing.
No one wants a player to free lance when it is not working. Although if a player seems something and reacts correctly to it and makes a huge play then that free lancing is wanted.
To me it comes down to why was he "free lancing". If he saw something and reacted was he right and someone on the opposition reacted to him and stopped Jones from making a play. Did Jones just read it wrong? There are just too many possibilities without more information.
Unless you are a player that knows the D extremely well or are one of the coaches it is a guessing game therefore should be left to the coaches and staff.
