Star Wars Rogue One Spoiler Thread

There's quite a bit of info trickling out so its probably time to start a spoiler thread. I'll update with a trailer when it's available.

Trailer #1. This looks amazing!!! Darth Vader, The Emperor, Jyn (Rey's mother?), Forrest Whitaker, Donnie Yen and Alan Tudyk.

According to Pablo Hidalgo, this scene was in the script from the beginning, so much so that they alluded to Mustafar in the season finale of Star Wars Rebels Season One: "Mustafar is where Jedi's go to die".

I thought that scene carried so many implications that could affect and be explained in future spinoffs.

  1. This is the planet where Vader was "born". He effectively killed his wife, Padme, as well as his two unborn children.
  2. Obi Wan cutoff his remaining limbs.
  3. The Bacta tank! Was he in the tank because he had returned from another battle (which would be awesome) or did he foresee the future, which included another lightsaber battle with Obi Wan?
  4. Deep, psychological reminder: Vader needed to stay on Mustafar to constantly remind himself of the pain and suffering he caused and endured on that planet, which changed him forever. It made him focus on his hate for the Jedi.

I hope this all explored in future films but I can't wait to see the movie again today.
Don't get me wrong -- Vader made the movie better whenever he showed up -- but this scene to me seemed wedged in. It could have held a more important story point I guess is what I'm saying.

The bacta tank scene was in the very first trailer so it definitely wasn't an add-on or reshoot, which leads me to believe that Mustafar & Vader's Castle ties into the larger SWU, i.e. Star Wars Rebels as well as Episode VIII & IX.

After seeing Rogue One, I think that I may have figured out the identity of Rey's mother. I'll post as spoilers in all three Star Wars threads, even though these are "Spoiler" threads.

Spoiler!

If they used the scenes to plant the seed and establish another Vader-centric stand alone film, okay. Otherwise, it's fanboi *wink* eyecandy for the purpose of this film.

I doubt we get a Vader tale on the big screen simply because that is some major heavy duty lifting to execute a great script that works within the continuity of the established films and doesn't involve a bunch of actors all far too old to reprise roles- though Tarkin is an epic digital achievement, I don't think it would be wise to lean heavily even more on multiple CGI reprisals.
Spoiler!

Who knows?
Perhaps a story that takes place right after Episode III would be the best window of opportunity? The addition of the standalone films certainly makes the absence of the original trilogy characters a much more feasibly acceptable premise now!

I'm not even saying I disliked it, but you have to agree it doesn't serve this story unless it is setting up future narratives.

Oh, and the 1 scene that really failed IMO was the sappy conversation between Jyn & Cassian about 3/4 of the way through when they're in the hanger (?). I seriously thought the dialogue sounded like they had Lucas come in and write the scene, because it was such a weak exchange between 2 otherwise smart characters who are both survivors of war in spite of tremendous personal loss. It was reminiscent of some of the Padme & Anakin dialogue.

I'm probably not referencing the scene all that clearly, so maybe someone else knows which scene I'm talking about and can better pinpoint it down. Either way, it's my minor quibble with an otherwise fantastic execution of the SWU standalone franchise.

Darth Vader!!

Movie was great, but I have one problem with Vader. Remember what the Michael Meyers mask looks like. The neck portion of the mask. It was all loose, and looked bulky fitting over his clothes.

That's what Vader looked like. All his apparel from the neck down was almost tucked under the big bulky neck of Vaders helmet.

Compare RO Vader with this video:

(forward to last few seconds of video)

At least in this video the helmet and suit are 'connected'.

Heres quick shot of the new vader:

Saw it again today. Took my dad, who has never seen a Star Wars movie, and the kids. Non 3D and I think the non 3D version is better.

I saw it really late last night and need to see again to have more thoughts. Wasn't as excited going in as I was like last year with thinking even more backstory and tired of deathstar superweapons but thought most of it was pretty great. Fortunately one the top screens in my city, AMC Dolby Cinema, managed to have it without 3D which made it an even better experience.

CGI Tarkin was pretty distracting.

it was NOT fixed with cgi, as i saw the movie and commented to my wife about the same thing, while watching the movie.

vader's suit to helmet ratio was inaccurate. its not my fault if you didnt see it

So the Peter Cushing thing is starting to bring up some controversy

What's to stop Hollywood from making a new blockbuster movie starring John Wayne, River Phoenix or Heath Ledger??
