CNN) -- An oil spill off Louisiana was designated a spill of "national significance" Thursday, meaning assets can be drawn from other states and areas to combat it, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.
The U.S. military may be called on to assist authorities scrambling to mitigate the potential environmental disaster posed by the spill as it expands toward the Gulf Coast, the Coast Guard said. In addition, another controlled burn of the oil slick may be conducted, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Erik Swanson said.

Yes, explosives would detonate at that depth. Again, though, I don't know why you keep bringing it up.

How is it going to leak through the hole they drilled if that hole doesn't existed anymore and that hole is instead pile of rubble at the bottom of the Gulf?

thats my concern, I understand trying to save it but now with a 600 mile oil slick threatning multiple states its time to seal that sucker and take your losses. And if they have a different opinion send a destroyer or something to the area and let them know who the big dog is here.

You are thinking of the wells that were set afire during the Gulf War, right? If so, they used explosives to blow the fires out, which then allowed them to get close enough to cap the well head.

Again, yes, they could make a big bang and make a bigger mess. What needs to be done is to cap it, and they are trying to do just that right now, with mini-subs.
