You should bypass Iowa and just go stay in East St Louis. It is beautiful this time of year.

If you like beer, El Bait Shop in Des Moines. I think they're up to like 180 taps, or so. Zombie Burger in downtown DSM is a fun stop, if you want to go casual.

Hickory Park, Ames Iowa.

Yes, El Bait Shop is great, but if you are looking to sample our local favors hit the Iowa Taproom.

13 hrs bud - you'll go through Tennesse, Kentucky and Illinois. It's sorta pretty going through Tennessee!

Let me know what you're into, and I can steer you in the right direction. The Des Moines area is really the only place worth stopping off I-35. I can direct you to the good areas, but there's really no bad part of town.

I went from KC to Minneapolis summer 2015. Not much between KC and MLPS, but you can check out:
Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake, IA: Where the music died. Music Man Museum: Mason City, IA. 76 Trombones, baby... Frank Lloyd Wright Hotel, Mason City, IA. Last hotel still in operation by FLW. Hickory Park in Ames in pretty good, Go off peak. Crowded at night. Capitol Grounds in Des Moines: If you like big domes. Check the DOT for Minn, IA, and MO. Lots of summer road construction on I-35. It can slow you down a lot. Have fun, safe travels. |
