Minor change in philosophy

Back when I joined ChiefsPlanet, new users could pretty much register, confirm their email address, and immediately start posting. That meant that we often got a lot of n00bs during game weeks from opposing fans, for example, because they wanted to jump in and talk about the game.

At some point maybe 3-5 years ago, a change was made in an attempt to keep out recently-banned users and porn spammers that required every new user to be manually approved by a mod before they'd be allowed to post. In concept, this makes a lot of sense. In reality, though, it resulted in large delays between registration and being able to post that ranged from a few hours to more than a week (depending on how often the mods checked the queue and went through everyone).

As an experiment, starting today we're going back to the old approach. It may not last, but we want to see if we see an uptick in n00b participation. Hopefully it's a change for the better, but we'll see.

Related to that, though, the mods won't be able to keep the "bad guys" from getting into the Planet in the first place, so please use the report function to report anything we should take a close look at. In addition, if you have infraction powers and someone starts spamming porn all over the place, feel free to infract the hell out of them until the mods can get in and take care of it.

No promises it'll stay this way, but we figured we'd give it a try.

I'd argue that had already happened wih DCS/RoR, black bob, and someone else who I won't mention because he'll follow me around repeating "not racist" racial slurs (which is what happened, not the other way around. He wasn't banned for just disagreeing with Phobia).

But I'll accept that for now.

Just mentioning that the last 3 years of deterring all n00bs at the expensive of forum growth was probably a poor management decision. Not surprised at all DaFace is back in charge and fixing everything. Dude is a great mod/admin.

I certainly understand the intent. I think the fatal flaw was just not having a structure around how often people should review new registrations for approval.

That said, my HOPE is that the combination of the new(ish) rules and the addition of the Romper Room (coming pretty soon here) will allow some semblance of options for people who are either 1) here to talk serious Chiefs football and 2) love more of a no-holds-barred kind of discussion.

We'll see how it goes. Again, this is all kind of a big experiment.

Jeezus, letting Hootie back is like inviting Stephen A. Smith onto Around the Horn.

Does CP have to appoint him his very own Reali? Dispensing mutes and points until he can behave civilized?

I was a mod on another forum once, and I know that it's a thankless job. A good moderator is very much appreciated. A lot of people would want to rattle the sabre against people in richard measuring contests, or to use the buttons simply because they are there for you now. But a good mod is like a good referee, they have their best days when no one is talking about them.

It seems like the current crop is making some improvements. It would be good to see some (good) poster growth and the return of former (good) posters who were alienated or sick of the negativity flood posters. Maybe that will happen as draft talk ramps up.

I'm referencing one show, with a guest from another.

ATH is moderated by Reali through mutes and points, and SAS would be a visiting pundit.

Granted, I haven't watched ATH in a few years ... never remembered SAS being on that show. I hate him, though.
