Goodell: support for expanded playoffs is "tremendous"

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...is-tremendous/

Quote:
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell seems fully on board with adding two playoff teams.

Although the owners have not yet voted to expand the postseason to 14 teams, it sounds like just a matter of time, based on the comments Goodell made at the league meeting today.

“We had a good discussion on it on several fronts,” Goodell said. “As you know, the Competition Committee has been looking at this for a couple of years. We have discussed it in various committees, including broadcasting. We had a full discussion on the floor with the owners and other executives this week. I think there’s a tremendous amount of interest in this, possibly even to the point of support, but there are also things we still want to make sure we do it right. We’ve been very incremental in trying to do this, but we believe competitively it could make even our races toward the end of our season even more exciting with more teams vying for playoff positions, which is great for our fans. We still want to do some additional work, including talking with the players association. We have a scheduled meeting set for April 8. This will be one of the things we’ll probably discuss and then we’ll also have to talk to broadcast partners and there are some scheduling issues that we still need to work through.”

It seems unlikely that the league will expand the playoffs for the 2014 season. But it looks like it’s going to get done in 2015.

That's right, which means that teams fighting for 1st place won't be sitting their starters the last two weeks of the season.

They need to expand the reg season to 25 games with games on mon-sun..then have a 2 month long playoff with all the teams having a chance. Get your brackets in now.

oh and no TAUNTING! Oh and no DUNKING on the GOALPOST and no TOUCHING PEYTON and move the kickoff up further so nobody gets hit on kickoffs..

What will be cool, is if they ever start giving home games based on record seeding as opposed to division champs. There's no reason a 7-9 (shitty) division champ team should be hosting a 12-4 #5 seed.
Agreed. I'm all for letting the division winners in, but a 12-4 wild card team should host an 8-8 division winner.

They need to trade the players pads in for maxi pads. Bleeding pussies.

That 10 win team stuck on the outside has usually been because they are just in the wrong division.

What happened to the whole eliminating divisions thing and just going by record?

I have to tell you that if this is what would hold them up then **** them. I'd at least like to pretend that they give a little ol shit about the game and not just the pay.

No they should not.
Winning your division has to mean something.
An 8-8 team might be in the toughest division while a 12-4 team might have had an easy schedule to explain their record.

It's equally possible they're in the weakest division.

Winning your division would still mean something. A playoff berth. I think a 12-4 wild card team is probably in a tough division when 12-4 doesn't win it.

Chiefs can't even win one playoff game & now they would have to play an extra game to get to the Super Bowl?
